Owner's description

Those keen for a booze sozzled bush breakaway will love this rustic pub set in a 19th century milkshed. If the suns out, the action most definitely revolves around the outside deck and swimming pool.

Our family has an annual winter ritual, we go to the snow at Matroosberg and on the way back to Cape Town, we stop at the Calabash for lunch. We have done this for a couple of years and always look forward to it and have introduced our friends.
    Today was horrific!
There seemed to be less of a crowd than normal, other than a couple of VW Golf enthusiasts, in fact the bar was empty and I got my drinks order immediately. There were two ladies serving at the bar, we chose one of the outside tables and were tended to quickly and efficiently by a well mannered and presentable waiter who made recommendations, took our orders and left.
45 minutes later, no sign of food (3 burgers and a starter chicken livers) so we go inside to find out and the manageress comes out, apologizes, and assures us just another 10 minutes, so we order another beer from her. The food arrived 20 minutes later and we are still waiting for the beer.
There were two young, inexperienced waiters working their arse off while two barmaids looked bored inside. The menu is too extravagant and complex, the food is now very expensive and it's lost it's "Gees".
If we hadn't complained, we would never had seen the manageress, whereas in the past, the manager/owner was always mingling and operating.
Immediately after our meal, we got up to leave, I tipped the waiter and went inside to swipe my card in the bar.
Lordy, Lordy but that manageress came flying in there to check! I think she thought we were going to try and jump without paying. No love, we don't do that, but we wont be back.
    Will tell our friends
