Owner's description

Folk Cafe is a bright and breezy café in Bree Street, Cape Town celebrating coffee, food and people. We love free range, local and honest ingredients and try to use the best sustainable practices that we find. Conveniently situated in the mother city Folk has ample parking and offers a beautiful space for that 30min coffee meeting or afterwork wine and tapas. Folk Cafe features some of the Cape's greatest wineries and breweries on a wine list that is updated regularly.

The true test of a good restaurant is how they make a hamburger - my bun free Berger sounded great on the menu - patty on baby marrow bed with interesting garnish. First red flag was raised when no one asked me how I wanted my patty cooked - certainly not raw as I got it. Served only on a bed of Lettus and no baby marrow meant it was quite boring. The chips were over cooked. So it’s a new restaurant when I gave feedback to our waiter, he said he told the chef but who was too busy to talk to us. We were offered no compensation.

Nice little coffee shop with a cute interior. We tried the dark hot chocolate (good, but a very small cup for R30-odd) and the lavender white hot chocolate (very floral – I wasn't a fan, but Mr Stein seemed to like it). I tucked into the melanzane – took a while to reach the aubergine beneath all the cheese! Tasty, but odd that it comes served with a salad – very difficult to eat such a saucy dish with a knife and fork. Would be better with a piece of toast to scoop it all up.

What a delightful place. The decor is quirky, the atmosphere is intimate, the clientel is interesting. The coffee is brilliant and being a bit of a croissant snob I would say they have some of the best croissants I have had in the city centre and I am always looking for the next best croissant. Crispy, light and filled with air, "now you see it now you don't". Not that bready heavy pieces of dough that some places are trying to sell off as a "croissant. The menu is tight but it offers something for everyone. They have free wifi so I would say, it is one of my best cooffices. I didn't want to leave but after 2 hours of people watching, 2 croissants and a few cups of Americano's later, I left buzzing from all the caffeine but will be back on a regular basis. Highly recommended!
