Owner's description

The Medeo Restaurant at the Palazzo hotel in Fourways, offers one of the best outdoor dining facilities in Johannesburg, with two wooden decks and a terrace overlooking the beautifully manicured Tuscan-styled gardens and koi pond.

This sublime, sophisticated restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner with breakfast comprising a scrumptious hot and cold buffet with an a la carte menu to complement this.

Lunch and dinner offer an a la carte menu which is inspired by the flavours of the Mediterranean and dishes are given a creative twist under the auspices of Executive Chef, Arnold Stuurman and his team. The wine list is varied and provides a choice of carefully selected South African and International wines.

Firm favourites with guests are Hot Smoked Salmon, Baby Beef Cutlet, Oxtail and the Seafood Risotto. The dessert menu offers a selection of sublime sweetness! …. Milk tart served with lavender honeycomb, chocolate disk, and vanilla ice cream, or for lovers of chocolate, the Chocolate Tasting of Chocolate torte, white chocolate mousse, chocolate marquise, chocolate sauce, orange & apricot sorbet – decadently divine!

The menu is subject to change at our Chef’s discretion.

Sadly I was not made feel very welcome when I arrived asking for a table outside on the patio. The hostess even asked me why I am here because they are setting up for dinner (which only starts at 18:00). I felt guilty for asking to be served and guilty for asking for a menu. Is this how patrons are treated? Lucky my waiter had slightly better manners, proceeding to at least bring my drink and Palazzo salad promptly.

Very poor wine menu so good idea to BYO.

Lunch at this restaurant was outstanding with impecable service. Risotto and Sea Bass are absolute winners. Tables were well laid out with much attention to detail including marking the special occassion beautifully. Highly recommended and will be back.

What a lovely restaurant! I loved the views and the food was to die for! I had the seafood risotto starter which was actually very filling! The taste was remarkable! For mains I had the sea bass which was cooked to perfection! For dessert I had the chef's pastry special. It comprised of 4 nice portioned desserts which the chef likes. Mine was Tirimisu, a roll of caramel and mascarpone cream, a tiny bowl of creme brulee and a tiny piece of chocolate cake. 4 desserts in one! The most perfect ending to an awesome evening!

Decided to try De Medeo last night - having previously read good reviews and under the impression that the chef is Michelin rated. Either got the restaurant wrong or chef has since left, but food was very disappointing. Restaurant in lovely al fresco setting and menu looked promising. I had the prawns tempura to start - menu said it was served on a cucumber and chilli salad, but arrived on a bed of bland potato salad with a couple of cucumber slices on the side and no chilli in sight. My husband ordered the risotto Milanese starter - was more like soggy rice with a couple of threads of saffron. The mains were also disappointing - the T-Bone steak which was to be served with chips and béarnaise sauce arrived smothered in a brown basting, fat chips, a white sauce on the side which could not be classified as béarnaise and something resembling Yorkshire puddings. The thinnest T-Bone steak ever seen. My grilled rack of lamb arrived smothered in what appeared to be the same basting sauce as the T-Bone. Very disappointing experience all together. Next time we will stick to our tried and tested places.
