Trumps Grill is one of the oldest restaurants on Nelson Mandela Square. Opened in 1994 by the Martin brothers, Dennis, Allen and Michael, this iconic restaurant has recently undergone a makeover that has brought class, affordability and good food to the square. The revamp has also seen the brand open its doors to a bespoke butchery and deli on the premises.
Karan beef meat cuts, with salads, seafood, chicken and stews feature strongly on the menu. For starters order a few of the arrival plates to share. Try the springbok carpaccio, firecracker chicken wings glazed with a sticky bourbon sauce, and garlic-and-lemon calamari, as a perfect start.
The Kobe-style Wagyu with the “wow” sauce made with truffle butter and wild mushrooms is perfect for mains. Also try the ducking and diving chicken on spear, made with deboned, rolled chicken breasts marinated in garlic, cilantro and lime sauce, spiked with chorizo sausage, onion and peppers cooked on the grill and served with your choice of sides.
The menu also has a wide selection of burgers, ribs and seafood dishes that cater for most tastes and preferences. The dessert menu is small, with popular South African classics like malva pudding being featured.
Do visit the Trumps butcher and deli for grain-fed Karan beef cuts, special sauces and spices to take home.
Trumps boasts a big selection of local wines, which has been curated to suit the urban-classic-contemporary wine drinkers that make up the majority of the clientele. The cocktail menu has classics like the Long Island iced tea and craft cocktails like the hibiscus and mint gin and tonic being featured.
The service is good, with the maître d' and waiters making sure that all your needs are catered for. The staff members are very friendly and well-read on the menu, and make great recommendations for food and drink.
Trumps Grill is the perfect spot for business meetings, dinner dates or special family outings. The décor is classic white linen tablecloths with solid dark wood chairs, comfortable leather and velvet booths, creating a luxurious, comfortable and welcoming ambience.
