Where to get great pies in Cape Town

Warm up your winter with these cosy spots around Cape Town that serve up killer pies. From classic country-style chicken pies to decadent versions filled with unctuous lamb or mac and cheese, these places have got your comfort food cravings covered.

Café Frank (Century City and City Bowl)

This harvest-table restaurant is popular with the working lunch crowd. Check the daily menu to see which flavours and ingredients are being used for the day’s wholesome lunch offering. On the pie front, you can look forward to phyllo-wrapped fillings like roasted chicken and leek; lamb, pea and mint; beef and mushroom; and a wintery pork and red cabbage version. All lunch plates are served with a salad of your choice.

Chardonnay Deli (Constantia)

This casual Constantia deli offers families a perfect pit stop during a busy week or on a lazy weekend. Pie fans can look forward to getting a comforting individual pie with salad or gravy. The homemade pastry fillings often include beef, roasted chicken, or seasonal vegetables.

Jason Bakery (Green Point and City Bowl)

The filled golden pastry bombs at the Bread King’s bakery change daily. These pies have luxurious fillings like creamy lobster mac ’n cheese, salami pizza, roast chicken, spinach and feta, miso chicken and corn, and even a salmon-and-spinach sausage roll. Order it with a side salad or grab it to go.

Martin’s Bakery (Diep River)

This southern suburbs neighbourhood joint serves up homely café-style food, breads and pastries baked on site. The popular golden pies are made with flaky shortcrust pastry. The selection includes fillings such as pepper steak, chicken and mushroom, spinach and mushroom, and bacon and egg.

Mink & Trout (City Bowl)

This charming Bree Street bistro has become known for its hearty chicken pie. The filling is a rich chunky chicken gravy and the whole golden pie comes served with a truffle cream sauce. Pair it with triple-cooked chips or a simple side salad.

Ou Meul Bakkery (City Bowl)

Using the same famous Riviersonderend recipe, these pies have become a lunchtime favourite. The casing is perfectly short yet flaky. Enjoy with fillings like pepper steak, steak and kidney, coriander chicken, mutton, springbok, ham and cheese, spinach and feta, beef sausage roll, and bobotie.
