I ventured to the newly opened Melissas in Franschhoek. As with most new eateries the place was bustling with exploring new guests and locals from the village. The venue is expansive with typical Mellissa's decor and deli items. The space hosts and upstairs seating area with a communal table perfect for looking out at the mountains, reading the local paper and a well stretched flat white. There's also an al fresco dining area which will be great on warmer Winelands days situated under a leafy aged Wild Fig tree. I chose the quieter upstairs area which which meant slower service but less "noise and bustle" than downstairs, where most of the wait staff were congregated. After two flat whites I received a perfectly soft poached egg which was bedded on a courgette and potato fritter with smoked salmon, a salsa of sorts and perfectly paired capers which added bursts of acidity to the rich smokey trout. The bill came to R110.00 which is fair for Franschhoek. Service was great by a waiter named Teach, attentive but not over baring. As with new spots its best to go back after the teething times. So here's hoping they grow from strength to strength.
