Food
Although it’s no surprise what’s on offer here (hint: all of the meat), you go here for the steak. Yes, they have excellent lamb rump and T-bone, pork ribs and spatchcock chicken, but don’t waste time and energy: go for (beef) gold. It’s all pasture-reared and grain fed and exceptionally well prepared. The signature steaks are highlighted for a reason – try The Huguenot (bordelaise fillet with port wine and bone marrow jus), The Grosvenor (fillet with chocolate, chilli and beer), or the delectable The Collins (filet mignon flambeed in Cointreau and served with crushed Madagascan peppercorns and cream). All meat is presented on a plate so that you can choose your cut. The often massive chunks of meat are great to share, so make sure you go with a group of people so that you can try a few different cuts.

Excellent sides compliment the excellent meat: sweet potato mash, (really good) braaibroodjies, onion rings and the famous twice-fried Fat Butcher fries.

It’s worth investing in a three-course meal. Starters are an interesting selection of meaty and fishy options, including beef short rib, bone marrow on toasted crostini, West coast mussels cooked in sauvignon blanc, peri-peri livers and steak tartare. The one not-to-miss is the skaapstertjies – lamb tails wrapped in netvet (crépine), chargrilled and served with peri-peri sauce. Crispy, fatty goodness!

The dessert menu is thoughfully divided into appealing options depending on your vibe (or the size of your dessert stomach): poeding, coffee, teas, fortified and dessert wines, and dessert cocktails. Try the chocolate brownies or Dom Pedros.

Drinks
A stellar list of Stellenbosch wines, with a more than decent by-the-glass selection. There is also a great offering craft beers, cocktails, soft drinks and hard tack.

Service
As excellent as the meat. Friendly and informed and always ready with great recommendations.

Ambience
A beautiful space to match a beautiful dining experience. The historical building has been modernized with contemporary leather, metal and wood. Seating is comfortable – perfect for long, lazy dinners. On balmy summer evenings the courtyard is the place to be.

  • I want to nominate this restaurant as the best steakhouse in the Western-Cape. It is truly an amazing experience time and again, I have never been disappointed dining here. We go back all the time as the food is just superb, we have never experienced anything but excellent service and the relaxed atmosphere makes you feel like you are dining at a best friend's house. The most interesting cuts of meat served with mouth-watering side dishes (and of course, my favorite, the slow roasted garlic sauce). Also, a very versatile wine selection makes for the perfect meal. So much attention to detail in every aspect. Worth every penny.

  • Best steak by far! Succulent meat cooked to absolute perfection - no need for any sauce as the basting is a perfect compliment to the tender meat - which is juicy but firm. Presentation of the meat cuts upfront is really good and informative - focussing on the meat with just enough trimmings to make your mouth water! What you order is what you get - really good service too.

  • Having battled for months to get in we were delighted to take an out of town friend there today and boy were we not disappointed. Every attention to detail has been made. The chalmar beef is so beautiful and well aged... And cooked to perfection. We tried their speciality steaks... I had the New Yorker which even comes with a marrow bone. My friend had the ribeye on the bone and all our sauces were exceptional. They don't charge corkage which helps take the sting out of the the meal... Even the steak knives are different and super sharp. Dessert was melktert and warm stick toffee.... Sublime. Rita the owner spends time chatting and there is no doubt in my mind we'll be back. LOVED IT.

  • We had a super awesome Date Night at The Fat Butcher. We shared the Smoked Salmon Trout Salad as a starter, which was divine. I had the best oxtail, would definitely recommend it. My husband had the Cote de Bceuf Steak. Excellent service, interesting setting, beautiful out door patio. I'd recommend it any day.

  • Stellenboschs most popular steakhouse! Its a gourmet steak experience. They only serve dry aged Chalmar beef. Service is really good with proficient staff that give you world class service. The restaurant provides four seating areas in this quaint setting, with each area being quite different to the other. I recommend sitting in the courtyard. You should order a steak if you visit - they provide normal ajd some luxurious cuts on the menu BUT before you make up your mind think about their specialty cuts which they will provide a presentation of. The Tomahawk or Picanha are great to share with plentybof chips and sauce.

  • Super high prices and mediocre food at best, first and last time at this place, once again proof that one can't believe what critics write, should have gone back to Hussars but thought of trying something new, big mistake.
