  • Such a delicious salad! Eating it now at work and loving it - chargrilled brocolli with toasted seeds and chilly - delicious!! :)

  • Found this little gem on an unlikely corner of Bree. Service was quick, which I needed on a lunch break, and food is delicious. I had string beans there which have reshaped my view of green vegetables. Since then i have indulged in the brownies too - just writing this is making me crave them. I think the owner caters for functions too

  • A perfect spot for a quick coffee and takeaway breakfast - ask for the fluffy scrambled eggs with meaty mushrooms or smoked salmon. I can't resist the daily quiches: delicious golden pastry with options like mushroom and bacon or cherry tomato and tons of feta.

  • Aside from the delicious lunch offering, the best kept secret about the General Store is the breakfasts they do - for take away too. Fluffy scrambled and perfectly crisp bacon on sourdough is a favourite.

  • Really great little lunch spot on Bree Street. Tried the arancini balls and some of the salads - which are fresh and generous. Will be back to try the tempting looking cake!

  • Friendly, swift service with a smile and the most beautiful salads you could imagine. The chef transforms ordinary ingredients like green beans, red onions and root vegetables into flavourful salads with jewel-like accents of nuts, herbs, olives, dates and cranberries. You can have a little takeaway box of salads for R35, or add a protein (usually salmon, chicken or beef fillet, sometimes meatballs) and pay R60-R65. Order and pay at the counter, and find a seat or walk back to the office. Simple and satisfying.

  • Incredible flavours. Great produce. Simple dishes. Quick service. A variety to choose from. Affordable midday fare. Did I mention frieken fresh? I think The General Store has ruined all other lunch options for me.

  • My new favourite lunch spot in town! They have a selection of takeaway foods to try every day. I had a delicious prosciutto and leek quiche there along with a great variety of different salads.

  • 3 people suggested The General Store when I went searching for some healthy comfort food. Starting with great coffee, they offer fantastic fresh and tasty lunch dishes. Apparently new dishes come out everyday. Atmosphere is clean and relaxing. We will be back.

  • Fab little lunch spot addition to Bree Street. Delicious array of salads that change daily (roast veggies, noodles, beans & feta etc) and proteins (pesto chicken, beef fillet with salsa verde, lamb curry) for you to choose from and customise your lunch. A medium-size takeaway box costs R60 and is more than enough to make for a really satisfying lunch. There are a few two-seaters inside if you want to eat in. If you are, your lunch is served on a beautiful Meryvn Gers plate or bowl.

  • I've yet to try the tasty looking array of lunch options - but the chocolate pistachio brownie deserves a review of its own. In my personal quest for the perfect brownie it comes close to perfection. Superlatively gooey, with a slightly crisp flaky top. I'm not sure the pistachios are even necessary.
