Critic's review

The humble appearance of this family-run favourite belies the skill in the kitchen. In addition to daily specials, expect twice-baked cheese soufflés, crispy duck with Van Der Hum sauce, or pork fillet cooked in prunes and sherry. The hearty breakfasts also make it a popular pit stop for locals.

Unlicensed, but BYO welcome.

Warm and friendly, as you’d expect from a mom-and-daughters eatery.

Cosy and uncomplicated, with food that punches way above the simple setting.

There’s a shady courtyard garden in the back. (RH, October 2011)

  • A warm and friendly place, with an excellent staff and outstanding food at reasonable prices. What more could you wish for. They have a delightful courtyard where you can sit outside in good weather and do excellent evening meals on Friday and Saturday evenings. The menu caters for a variety of tastes and even accommodates those Banters who are trying to stick to their guns while eating out. You really can't go wrong here - one of the most consistently good places to eat In Hermanus!

  • If had only one evening in Hermanus we would definitely spend it at the Cuckoo Tree. Great hospitality from the mother and daughter team and superb food - my Cape salmon was really fresh and cooked to perfection. The place doesn't look anything special from the outside but once inside you get a great culinary experience.
