Owners description

A true inner-city, vintage neighbourhood bar and restaurant that embraces South African braai culture.

Relax, unwind and adopt a carefree attitude. The large balcony plays host to braais in summer and offers lovely views of the surrounding concrete jungle, while the enchanting colonial fireplace makes winter nights more bearable.

The menu is a melting pot of South African cultures that has been put on a plate. Visitors can expect enticing options like braai boards (a selection of local braaied meats served with chakalaka), freshly baked roosterkoek, Durban-style hot peri-peri chicken, boerewors burgers, biltong and cheese platters, potjies and appetising sides like pap, grilled mielies, potato salad, chips and more.

The venue boasts TVs and a large drop-down projector for the screening of sports matches. Live music and an in-house DJ creates a vibe that carries the party long into the night.

This is a place where we raise our glasses to foolish renegades, adventurous idiots and all the people who refuse to live life by the rules of normality.

  • Set in the Cape Town CBD, we climbed up the steep stairs (not wheelchair friendly) and made our way through the restaurant and out onto the balcony. There was a vibey atmosphere. There were two separate sets of people dressed up in theme outfits, which added to the fun element. We went for the delicious carvery consisting of a generous helping of Pork Belly on the spit, with baby potatoes, and root vegetables. It was delicious and also incuded a help yourself salad bar, consisting of greens, beetroot, butternut, olives, sauces. Something for everyone.

  • We had a surprisingly good meal here, fully expecting rough pub fare we received thoughtfully plated and prepared meals. The ribs were tender and my seafood sosatie was delicious. Funky menu and great vibe!

  • Absolutely the best place to seek refuge from the cold winter weather. On arrival, my friends and I were escorted to a table close to the warm, toasty wood-burning fireplace (lucky us) and the place was buzzing with a lively atmosphere which was absolutely fitting for the miserable rain and raging wind outside. We waited for ages for someone to assist us at our table and eventually when the waitress arrived, we ordered our drinks and were sure to order our food as well (in case she didn't return). The Belgian Cherry Beer was AMAZING! The tangy taste and distinct cherry flavour called for a second glass which I gladly ordered. I was slightly disappointed when my food arrived, the ribs (although soft and practically falling from the bone) was slightly bland. The citrus flavour was good but it missed the salty and savoury taste that I was longing for. Dessert was equally amazing as the cherry beer. The Amarula bread pudding with condensed milk ice cream was simply delicious and the chocolate brownie with rooibos ice cream was equally so. Will I return? Absolutely, I was already sold at Belgian Cherry Beer! And to top this all off, the restrooms are beautifully structured with Listerine, hairspray and toothpaste! These guys just thought of EVERYTHING.
