The Heavy Punch

The heavy punch cocktail

Before there were cocktails, there was punch. Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum suggests you mix up The Heavy Punch, which was originally concocted in Norman’s garage.

Ingredients

1 1/2 parts Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
1 part fresh Pineapple Juice
1/2 part Port
1/2 part sugar syrup
1/2 part fresh Lime Juice
4 dashes of Aromatic Bitters

Method

Before there were cocktails, there was punch. Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum suggests you mix up The Heavy Punch, which was originally concocted in Norman’s garage.

Punch was popular back in the day, and is still a favourite go-to party drink for some. Rather than using the palm sugar spirit called “arrack”, which was common in India back then, everything from brandy to rum to champagne became fair game for the punch bowl over the years.

Today, the punch bowl itself is still the hub where guests meet and chat while refilling their cups, and the sheer quantity means drinks and conversation keep flowing. The Heavy Punch is made up of Sailor Jerry, pineapple juice, syrup, lime juice and a couple of dashes of aromatic bitters. While your average bar might have some sangria, a bowl of Heavy Punch has all that and more.

METHOD
Combine ingredients, shake and strain over crushed ice. Garnish with fresh grated nutmeg.

It’s not only the best thing you can put in a bowl, it’s the best thing you can do for your December gatherings – Just ask Norman ‘Sailor Jerry’ Collins.
