4 of Durban’s best specialty sweet treat spots you have to visit

Wedgewood Ballito Emporium

KZN confectioner Gilly Walter’s company Wedgewood Nougat recently opened a New Emporium in the Ballito Lifestyle Centre. The Emporium is like a grown-up candy shop; they stock all the Wedgewood favourite crafted nougat in every possible shape and style, from bon bons to candy bars, the most divine butter shortbreads and nougat biscuits to an array of decadent ice creams. Customers have the opportunity to choose the Wedgewood gift hampers that suit their budget and tastes. There is even a create-your-own option. They have recently released their Diwali gift options which are as diversely different and colourful as Diwali itself.

Love Waffles

Love Waffles is a fun waffle shop owned by Faizal Vawda. The store has incredible signature waffles like: Brownie Bliss Waffle, home-made brownie pieces on a crisp Belgian waffle smothered with choc brownie ice cream and Nutella drizzle;

Malva Waffle, a traditional South African dessert brought to you in a waffle, soaked in malva sauce, served with warm custard and your choice of ice cream or fresh cream; and Pastry Waffle, a pure butter pastry served as a waffle topped with fresh cream and fresh strawberries, drizzled with a decadent strawberry sauce.

They also do savoury items for those who prefer them, as well as croffles and crepes.

Scoop Ice Cream

Amanda Maidman began Scoop Ice Cream in her home kitchen. Now they are fast outgrowing their Ballito factory and have three outlets for their artisanal ice cream. The ice cream is made from locally sourced milk and cream from KZN Jersey cows; fresh fruit is also locally sourced from nearby farms. Although the vanilla is from Madagascar and the chocolate is from Belgium, they do go into the most South African flavours like Braai Banana (Heritage Month Special), Christmas Pudding and Popcorn. They also stock sorbets, low-sugar alternatives, Scoop Rolls, waffles and shakes.

Wicked Donuts

Jeanne Brooks owns one of the best donut shops in KZN, which can rival Krispy Kreme on any day – soft, delicious, gorgeously decorated, decadently flavoured and fresh daily. Their Mini Filled Donut holes have become a huge customer favourite. Flavours range from the Durban favourite Burfi to Nutella. Boujee Letter Donuts (a Wicked Donuts speciality) are a fast-growing Durban party must-have. You get to order donuts in letters that spell out whatever you want from “Happy Birthday Mum” to “It’s a Girl”, with or without filling, the choice is all yours.
