The temperatures may be dropping around the country as winter sets in, but things are heating up in the kitchen as South African chefs join forces with international legends and wine masters for a series of exciting collaborations.  

A chance for the chefs to merge their distinctive styles and riff off each other’s creativity, these partnerships will create one-of-a-kind experiences for diners that promise unique menus and memorable moments.  

From Michelin-starred collabs to local favourites crafting special menus together, these are the culinary collaborations you’ll want to add to your calendar this month.

Sushiya: Sushi Masterclass 

When: 12 June
Cost: R450, including DIY sushi, six-piece omakase platter and sake 

Peter Tempelhoff, from three-star restaurant FYN, will join chef Shinichiro Takagi, owner and head chef of two-Michelin-starred Zeniya in Kanazawa, Japan, and Sushiya head chef Ryan Reyes for a sushi-making masterclass at Time Out Market. Diners will learn how to make their own sushi alongside the chefs and can take advantage of a sushi and sake special on the day.

Roots Revisited: A Celebration of Heritage 

When: 13 & 14 June
Cost: R2500 per person 

Eat Out Woolworths Financial Services Chef of the Year, Johannes Richter, and chef Wandile Mabaso, from one-star restaurant Les Créatifs, are joining forces once again to celebrate tradition, heritage and the beauty of local ingredients at The LivingRoom at Summerhill Guest Estate. The two chefs will create a multi-course tasting experience that will be paired with a selection of premium South African wines or a bespoke non-alcoholic offering curated by Johanna Richter, The LivingRoom sommelier and front-of-house lead.

FYN: Connected By Currents 

When: 14 June
Cost: R5 750, including beverage pairing and gratuity 

Peter will be joined in the FYN kitchen by chef Shinichiro and chef Jef Schuur of the acclaimed Bij Jef (one-Michelin-starred restaurant) in Den Hoorn, the Netherlands, for FYN: Connected By Currents. Along with FYN culinary director chef Ashley Moss, the three chefs will host an exclusive Relais & Châteaux dinner in honour of World Oceans Day. The once-off multi-course tasting experience will be made up of dishes spanning Asia, Europe and Africa and will be paired with a collection of coastal South Africa wines, as well as ocean-inspired cocktails and other drinks, curated by FYN sommelier and service director Jennifer Hugé.

Rare Library Wine Dinner 

When: 21 June
Cost: R2950 per person  

Chefs Luke Dale Roberts and Carla Schulze of two-star restaurant Salon in Cape Town will create a special tasting menu to accompany a carefully selected range of rare mature vintages from the private library cellar of Hamilton Russell Vineyards. Anthony Hamilton Russell, the proprietor and second-generation custodian of the iconic Hemel-en-Aarde estate, will present the wines, which are no longer available on the market. The bespoke menu will complement the depth and character of each vintage for a once-in-a-lifetime tasting experience designed for serious wine enthusiasts and collectors.

The Pot Luck Club Cape Town x Belly of the Beast 

When: 24-26 June at Galjoen and 27 & 28 June at The Pot Luck Club
Cost: R1500 per person, optional wine pairing at R795 per person 

Jason Kosmas of two-star restaurant The Pot Luck Club Cape Town and Neil Swart and Anouchka Horn, the chefs/restaurateurs behind Eat Out starred restaurants Belly of the Beast and Galjoen, and new eatery Seebamboes, are teaming up to create a multi-course menu that will combine the personalities of all four kitchens. Diners can expect bold flavours, personal storytelling and playful reinventions.
