5 great places for cheesy nachos around SA

Whether you like them gloriously crowned with spicy chilli con carne, fiery pulled chicken, or simply an extra helping of grated cheese and creamy guacamole, nachos will always be a crowd favourite – and they go down beautifully with an ice cold beer or cider. Here are five places around the country to nab some supremely cheesy nachos.

La Santa Muerte (Melville, Johannesburg)

Offering a fresh take on trendy Mexican food, this relaxed new spot is the latest from the Hell’s Kitchen team. Their nacho offering is in the main meals section of the menu and comes topped with white cheddar, feta, jalapeños, grilled corn, pico de gallo and sour cream for R65, and with a choice of various salsa and guacamole variations. (Pay R82 for nachos with beef, R78 with chicken and R84 with pork.)

El Pistolero (Constantia Park, Pretoria)

The Jacaranda city’s trendy new Mexican eatery serves an appetising starter portion of cheesy tortilla chips. Get your plate of nachos for R70, topped with a crumble of tangy queso fresco and sprigs of coriander. The dish is served with a side of fresh guacamole and some spicy salsa Mexicana with burnt tomatoes and picked habaneros. The nachos are homemade and slightly lighter than your standard chip, making them a perfect starter snack before diving into some of their tacos.

El Toro (Durban North, Durban)

Mackeurtan Avenue’s Mexican tapas bar has a dedicated nacho section on the menu. These traditional crispy corn chips are grilled with crema mozzarella and mature cheddar, and come in five different variations. Choose from Durban-inspired lamb and paneer (R65.80), chicken and pecorino (R60), burnt corn with aubergine (R55), spicy ground beef and beans (R66), and plain (R50). All options come with the homemade guacamole, jalapeño salsa and a lime and sour cream yoghurt.

The Fat Cactus (Gardens, Mowbray and Woodstock, Cape Town)

Begin your meal with Cheezy Nachos are grilled and served with all the trimmings; the heftier Nachos Grande are served with tons of cheddar and your choice of spicy protein – beans, sloppy Joe beef or Mexican chicken. Alternatively, get your hands messy with one of the Cowboy Nacho options like the BBQ chicken and chipotle chilli, chorizo jalapeño and feta, or bacon, blue cheese and feta (R95 each).

Tuk Tuk Microbrewery (Franschhoek, Cape Winelands)

The newest microbrewery to hit the winelands, Tuk Tuk is perfect for a portion of nachos washed down with craft beer. Their spicy corn chip offering comes piled high with spoonfuls of creamy green guacamole, finely chopped pico de gallo and a cooling dollop of sour cream. A sprinkle of fresh coriander and melted cheddar adds the final touch (R90).
