5 great-value sushi specials in Joburg

Sure, there are other things that get us excited: the opening of hip new markets, the arrival of Cadbury’s Creme Eggs in the stores for Easter, heck, even the prospect of breakfast on any given day has us all giddy with anticipation… But there are few things as glorious as a good sushi special. We scoured Jozi’s sushi spots to bring you five great-value deals taking place right now in the City of Gold.

Beluga (Waterfall)

It would be remiss not to mention Beluga’s half-price deal, which started out at the Cape Town branch, where it reputedly helps the Caviar group to sell more than 18 million pieces of sushi each year. The deal applies to all sushi, dim sum and cocktails from 12pm to 7pm from Monday to Saturday, and 12pm to 10pm on Sunday. It excludes the three plates that are available at half-price all of the time: the yellow plate, with 20 pieces of sushi, is yours for R135; the green plate, with 14 pieces of sushi and six pieces of sashimi comes in at R145; and the blue plate, with 20 pieces of sushi and six pieces of sashimi, is R165. (Which also sounds like a particularly good deal, if you’re capable of sharing.)

Cape Town Fish Market (Fourways)

Tuesdays and Thursdays are the days to diarise for CTFM if you’re sushi obsessed. On Tuesdays, there’s 50% off sushi and 25% off all sushi platters. On Thursday from 6pm to 10pm, tuck into the all-you-can-eat buffet with hot dishes and a variety of sushi, including fashion sandwiches and California rolls, for R136 per person.

Celestino’s Dainfern Restaurant (Midrand)

Celestino’s has a broad menu – from pizzas and burgers to steaks and salads – but on Wednesdays, you can eat all the sushi your seafood-loving belly can hold for just R120 per person. This special is only available between 6pm and 10pm and includes California rolls, fashion sandwiches and maki rolls only. No sharing or wastage is allowed.

GweFey Asian Cuisine (Sandton)

Located in Johannesburg’s World Trade Centre, GweFey is a great option for those who work in the business district. Happily for sushi fans, the restaurant is now offering a weekend special to draw in the crowds after the work week is done. Sushi is now half-price at GweFey on Saturdays from 12 noon to 5pm and all day Sunday. The special excludes sashimi and bento boxes, but you can tuck into roses, California rolls, nigiri, maki, fashion sandwiches or hand rolls at half price. You’re looking at two salmon roses for R24, eight salmon California rolls for R42.50, and four prawn fashion sandwiches for R24.

Tsunami Seafood Emporium (Morningside)

This handsomely decorated spot offers discounted sushi on Thursdays, and three-for-two specials on sushi all day Monday. The Thursday discounts at Tsunami depend upon the colour of the plate, but you’ll find plates ranging from R17.50 to R34.50.
