5 killer sushi specials in Cape Town

Spring has sprung and it comes bearing more than beautiful flowers, sunshine and, er, pollen (achoo!). The best part of spring is arguably its association with sushi – that’s right, spring is also the start of sushi season. So, without any further ado, ready those chopsticks. A world of sushi awaits.

Active Sushi (Bree Street and Hudson Street)

Serving up sushi that is both fresh and easy on the pocket, Active Sushi on Bree Street has gained a loyal patronage of sushi lovers since its inception in 2008. And in June another Active Sushi restaurant opened in Hudson Street. Their all-you-can-eat sushi buffet will set you back a mere R139 – it includes California rolls, maki, fashion sandwiches and even sashimi nigiri and roses. The special runs from Monday to Friday, 4pm to 10pm, and on Saturdays from 12pm to 10pm. In the likely event that the sushi craving hits you at noon, opt for the lunch special (not all-you-can-eat) from as little as R50 for 10 pieces and R80 for 20 pieces.

African Pride Crystal Towers Hotel & Spa (Century City)

Get your sushi on in style from the African Pride Crystal Hotel Towers & Spa’s suspended pool deck, featuring breath-taking views of the city. Its half-price sushi special is offered every Thursday from 4.30pm to 7pm. This applies to the entire sushi menu, so you can tuck into anything from maki to sashimi and nigiri at half-price. Yes, please! Booking is advised – call 021 525 3888 or email events@crystaltowershotel.com.

Cape Town Fish Market (V&A WaterfrontCanal Walk, etc)

Every Thursday the longstanding favourite that is Cape Town Fish Market offers all-you-can-eat sushi for R144. The sushi buffet features the likes of makimono, fashion sandwiches and inside-out rolls, and is available from 6pm to 10pm on Thursdays only. It excludes sashimi and salmon roses, but these can be added at an extra cost. For two portions of sashimi (tuna or salmon) or roses, you’ll pay R24, or R42 for four pieces of either. The special runs throughout the year, except 24 December to 4 January 2016.

Sakura (Rondebosch)

From Wednesdays to Saturdays between 6pm and 10pm you can tuck into as much sushi as you can eat at Sakura in Rondebosch, which specialises in Asian fare. The sushi buffet costs R139 per person, which includes a refreshment of your choice to wash down all that nori and rice (be it a glass of wine, a beer or a soda). Like most other all-you-can-eat sushi deals, this one also excludes sashimi. Pick your favourites from the rotating conveyor out of fashion sandwiches, maki, salmon roses and crunchy tempura.

Salushi (Claremont)

This Asian eatery is located in Claremont in a beautiful setting, and has a modern, elegant interior perfect for lunch or dinner. They’ve recently brought back their R139 all-you-can-eat sushi special (usually only from 6pm to 9pm on certain days). The offer is discretionary, so there are no set dates confirmed. Check out Salushi’s Facebook page for daily updates on the all-can-eat sushi specials. It only applies to the à la carte and signature sushi, and excludes sashimi (sigh). The offer includes a range of options like California rolls, maki, fashion sandwiches and more. Booking is highly recommended. Email management@salushi.com for further information about the sushi deals.
