6 Tex Mex food trucks serving delectable dishes in SA

With the country now back on level one, this means events are about to start popping up again, but with social distancing precautions encouraged and restrictions in place. Responsible outdoor fun also means food trucks may begin to be sighted more often. If you’re in the mood for some Tex Mex in the soon approaching summer, follow these food trucks around the country for your best Mexican street food fix.

Cape Town:

NaJo’s Mexican

Jo Versailles established her vibrantly decorated trailer, Najo’s (a play on her name and nachos) in 2018, specialising in tacos and nachos. Expect delights ranging from BBQ pulled pork tacos, black bean and chorizo tacos, fresh battered hake tacos to lime and coriander marinated chicken nachos and more. Find them at markets and private events. They’ve kick-started their Food Truck Fridays with Whatsapp orders for collection and delivery from 5pm to 8pm in Pinelands.

Señor Onion

They pride themselves on being Helderberg’s Mexican connection. After realising the demand for Tex Mex food, the owners set up a shop in Somerset West where all their specialities are manufactured and then sold from their food truck. It’s everything from their delicious burritos, chilli poppers, chimichangas, Fajitas and nachos baskets with gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian and kid-friendly options. Look out for the Señor Onion truck at local markets, public and private events.

Didi’s Mexican Food Truck

This is Rosie – the Cape Town travelling food truck specialising in lipsmacking Tex Mex burritos with an African twist. While the burritos are the signature dish, you can also enjoy tasty tacos, toasted quesadillas, baked enchiladas, nachos and more. The food truck is available for music festivals and private events. You can also sample their menus from their takeaway shops in Mowbray and Newlands.

The loco in the name means that the Mexican street food plays on the experimental side with bold flavours and an urban take. From their burritos, nachos and tacos to their poppers, wings and burgers, the Tacos Locos taste is unforgettable. Find the food truck at private functions and selected public events. Taco Kombi

Having recently won the best Mexican eatery 2021/22 in the South Africa Prestige Awards, Taco Kombi is one to know and follow around Gauteng. Based in Pretoria, it is popular at the city’s markets such as the Hazelwood market and the Deep Roots Night Market in Groenkloof. But Taco Kombi also travels to public and private events around Gauteng serving Mexican deliciousness. Popular dishes include beef, chicken, pork and fish tacos.

Manny’s Authentic Mexican Street Food

La Cantina, an outdoor Mexican-style pub in the suburbs of Port Elizabeth is where you’ll find the food truck, Manny’s Authentic Mexican Street Food. The name says it all – think scrumptious burritos, quesadillas, chilli poppers and more Mexican street grub. The truck is available for private functions, festivals, birthdays and corporates events.
