Abigail honours Lannice Snyman

How do I write about Lannice Snyman – such a beautiful person, someone who was so much larger than life, a culinary genius?

Besides being one of the most respected foodies in South Africa, Lannice was a mother to all of us, so it’s ironic that she passed away on Mother’s Day. I respected her so much – as everybody did.

I loved her for all her laughter, integrity and inspiration. And most of all, I loved her for her compassion: she cared so much for the chefs, restaurateurs and foodies. She was always generous with her encouragement and never hesitated to affirm you when it was warranted. She was always there for me – whether offering advice on a recipe idea or acting as a sounding board for a personal dilemma – and I always felt her sincerity.

When Lannice was in the room, you couldn’t miss her – her bubbly personality captured the attention of everyone. Last year after the Prudential Eat Out Restaurant Awards, she took my hand and said: ‘I wish I had spoken the words you spoke to the industry tonight’. I knew in that moment that I had made her proud, and I will carry these very special words with me forever.

Lannice has left so many of us with beautiful memories, and all the chefs tables from now on will be a true celebration of Lannice.

With so much love,
Abigail
