African cuisines to explore this Heritage Month

Heritage Month is all about South African culture, but the greater African continent also has so many different flavours, textures and ingredients to explore – and you can enjoy it all right here on the southern tip of Africa. Here are seven restaurants to visit for a taste of our Motherland.

Blomplek (Soweto, Joburg)

From burgers to ribs and the epic Blomplek pizza, this restaurant shows how much South Africans love their meat! They also offer various platters and cater for spitbraais.

Épicure by Chef Coco (Sandton, Joburg)

Whether you go for breakfast, lunch or tapas, you’ll be able to work your way through the African continent at Épicure. Tunisian-style shakshuka, Zanzibari vitumbua crumpets, Ivory Coast crab and plantain, and Angolan chicken gizzards are just some of the amazing delights on offer.

Heritage Lifestyle Restaurant (Arcadia, Pretoria)

The concise menu provides a taste of what South Africa has to offer. Classics such as lamb curry, beef trotters, lamb chops and mogodu keep diners happy. For a quintessential South African meal, opt for the braai platter.

Meeting Point (Cape Town City Bowl)

Here, you can experience Tanzania right in the heart of the Mother City. Their vegan and vegetarian options are every bit as flavoursome and exotic as their fare for meat-lovers, so no one will leave disappointed.

Pahari African Restaurant (Salt River, Cape Town)

Pap is the name of the game here, whether you opt for plain sadza, sorghum pap or millet pap. Enjoy it alongside green veggies and a meat dish such as chicken or beef stew, tripe, ox trotters or tilapia.

SUD Restaurant (Soweto, Joburg)

Situated in the iconic Vilakazi Street, SUD (derived from the word “South”) is the ideal place to gain an understanding of the spices and flavours that make up the southern part of Africa. Enjoy Mozambican prawns, mogodu and milk tart, then stay for the afterparty – SUD is known for being a jol.

Urban Moyo (Sandton, Joburg)

The comprehensive food menu here is only outshone by the vibe and exciting cocktail menu. Choose a light meal or a platter to share while you imbibe, or opt for a more filling meal from the Moto menu – meat dishes made on fire and coal.
