Eat Out Woolworths Trailblazer for 2025, Bertus Basson is set to open his brand-new restaurant in Stellenbosch on 1 October. Located on Annadale wine farm, Toevlug will be a family-friendly space with a South African produce-focused menu.
“Toevlug will focus on simple South African produce-focused cooking. We are very happy to partner with Drikus Brink again, one of the most talented young chefs in South Africa. He truly understands produce and flavour in his own unique way. The farm is a historic cornerstone of the Stellenbosch wine industry, so to be able to open up a restaurant there is a real privilege for us,” said Bertus on Instagram.
“[It] will be a family-friendly space, and with the vibrant kids’ offerings on the farm, we look forward to welcoming the entire family. It’s the kind of space where kids can roam free and enjoy the great outdoors. Familiér, the farm shop, will continue to trade on the farm and the wine tasting sector will continue with its tastings.”
Why Toevlug? “Toevlug means sanctuary in Afrikaans; however, the word Toevlug is much deeper than just a sanctuary. Toevlug is a space where you feel warm and safe and cared for and that is what we are creating at Annandale,” explains Bertus.
