5 brewery restaurants in Durban and its surrounds

Summer days are on the horizon so here is a list of brewery restaurants in Durban and the surrounding areas that offer a combination of good brews and delicious food.

1000 Hills Brewing Company

This gem is ideally located in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, which is famous for its breathtaking picturesque views. The brewery is part of the 1000 Hills Chef School and offers three ranges of craft beer from its taproom, as well as seasonal artisanal dishes from its student-run restaurant, Classroom Café. The family- and pet-friendly indoor/outdoor venue not only treats patrons to a relaxed atmosphere but also plates up a variety of tasty dishes that cater for meat eaters, vegetarians, vegans and pets. Tours of the brewery are available on appointment and tasting trays are accompanied by six ice-cold craft beers. The café only opens on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 8.30am to 4pm, making it perfect for a weekend visit with good company.

Drakensberg Brewery

What can be better than sipping on a cold beer while enjoying the scenic view of the Drakensberg mountains? The brewpub, which sits within the Drakensberg Brewery, gives the best of both worlds in this respect. The craft brewery offers ales, pilsners and stouts on tap, accompanied by tastings and platter menu options. Not a beer fan? There’s also a wine list and a few selected gins. This venue, laid-back with its farmhouse-style setting, is perfect for a cold one after a hot day, a chill session with family and friends, or a lazy lunch after a hike up the trails. Brewery tours can also be arranged by appointment.

Eastcoast Brewing Company

This brewery, located in the small coastal town of Umkomaas, is the ideal place for a catch-up session with friends and family over a slice of mouth-watering wood-fired pizzas. The modern industrial taproom is heaven for beer enthusiasts, and the brewery’s spacious lawn area is the perfect playground for the kiddies to play and ride their bikes while the adults relax and enjoy a beer, rum or gin (and sometimes a live band!) after a long working day.

If you’re looking for comfort food and good times then you won’t go wrong with Unity Brasserie and Bar. This casual dining spot located in Musgrave offers appetisers, platters, poké bowls, burgers and pastas, as well as refreshing locally brewed craft beers from their tasting room run by sister company That Brewing Company. They also host quiz nights.

Zululand Brewing Company

Affectionately known as ZBC, this brewpub with a Zulu heritage theme offers everything from steak, seafood and wraps to tapas, gourmet burgers and bunny chows. (Plus a kids’ menu!) There’s also a drink for every occasion – from their Tapanga Gold Rum and Gin Gin I Love You mixers to their ale and flagship beer, as well as their signature Zulu Blonde. If you aren’t a beer drinker, there are also wines and milkshakes on offer. This is the go-to venue for breakfast with family, lunch with friends or a cosy dinner date.
