Your favourite Cape Town breakfast is now available in Joburg

Jacques Erasmus and Hemelhuijs – the Cape Town city bowl hotspot that’s known for its beautiful Cape farm-style cuisine – have brought their culinary prowess to Johannesburg in the form of a new partnership with So Yum in Hyde Park. Their collaboration, Hemelhuijs x So Yum, will be anchored by the Mother City restaurant’s well-loved breakfast menu, which will be served as part of the host’s existing offering.

While So Yum will offer a small selection of little-known dishes such as soft Japanese rice porridge and a selection of omelettes, the central breakfast offering will be from Hemelhuijs. Think freshly squeezed juices and well-loved signature breakfast dishes. Favourites such as soft ‘mieliepap’ served with local honey and salted butter, and grilled farm sausage in tomato and onion ‘smoor’ with soft poached egg will be on offer. Diners will also be able to order their poached egg atop homemade potato rösti with herbed crème fraîche or with roasted artichoke and Hollandaise.

From lunchtime, the menu’s emphasis will lean back to Asian flavours and will also feature salads including papino, orange and shaved fennel, or raw shaved vegetables with pear, beetroot and Japanese dressing.

Hemelhuijs x So Yum was inspired by the Joburg eatery’s recent move to a new, larger and more central position upstairs at Hyde Park Corner. Jacques together with Ernst Fischer, owner of So Yum and various other restaurants, had long spoken about collaborating, and the move presented them with the ideal opportunity.

As for the look and feel of the Hemelhuijs x So Yum concept, expect to see the same whimsical café-style touches for which the Cape Town eatery is known. There will also be a nook at the entrance of the restaurant stocking the sought-after Hemelhuijs Home Collection.
