Chefs Warehouse in Bree Street reopens as wine and pinchos bar

Late last year Eat Out caught wind of chef Liam Tomlin’s new collaboration project, Local at Heritage Square, situated at the historical landmark in Cape Town’s city centre. The entire space has been transformed into a food and wine lover’s utopia – a “market eatery platform” that boasts a shopping experience, as well as various dining options surrounding the Heritage Square open-air courtyard. La Cantina and Mazza are two that have been open for some time, serving Italian and Middle Eastern small plates respectively.

This week, amid much excitement and anticipation, Liam and his team reopened Chefs Warehouse and Canteen as a wine and pinchos bar. Many consider Chefs Warehouse in Bree as the OG of the burgeoning restaurant group, having opened its doors in 2014, so it’s exciting to see the establishment being given new life after the nightmare that restaurateurs have had to face in recent months due to COVID-19 and SA’s lockdown restrictions.

The new concept will focus on wine and pinchos (Spanish tapas). Chef Gordon Logan is heading up the kitchen after having cooked at Foliage in Franschhoek, and will be working closely with Liam to serve a menu that gives locals and those visiting a truly memorable Chefs Warehouse experience.

Guests can look forward to classics such as jamon Iberico – aged, acorn-fed cured leg of ham that is ceremoniously sliced off the leg by one of the chefs. There are also sardines and tomato on toast, salt-baked prawns with roasted garlic aioli, and potato croquettes with chorizo, just to name a few. The wine selection has been carefully curated by sommeliers Lennox Nyengera and Penny Setti. The list showcases their favourite wines from South Africa’s best wine farms and producers. And if wine isn’t your thing, they also mix a variety of classic and original cocktails.

The small plates way of eating that Liam and his team have become so well-known for fosters a greater sense of sharing and connection – something so many of us are craving at this moment in time.

Chefs Warehouse Wine & Pinchos is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays 12–8:30pm. Please note: unlike a few of the other Chefs Warehouse restaurants, the Bree Street branch does not take bookings!
