Doggy’s day out: Where to enjoy a meal with man’s best friend in Pretoria

Dogs have enjoyed a special bond with mankind for thousands of years. Several restaurants pay homage to this special bond by offering something special on their menu especially for our furry canine companions.

Ouma Issie’s Tea Garden (Irene)

Take your dog on an engaging trail on the grounds of Smuts House. Soak up some history and loads of fresh air at this historic site. The tea garden is charming, with lots of outdoor seating. This space is very pet friendly. There are water bowls available to quench the post-walk thirst. After your walk, you can also sit down to a delightful breakfast. Order the Wagter’s Breakfast for your pooch. It consists of three scrambled eggs and a portion of boerewors. A delicious treat at only R32!

Prosopa Greek Restaurant (Waterkloof Heights)

This delightful eatery will welcome you and your fur kids with a water bowl and a smile! The restaurant will allow dogs of all sizes in the outdoor areas and on the grass, permitting that they are on a leash and not obstructing the movement of staff and other patrons. Ask about the doggy menu, which has a choice between beef stix (R60) and chicken stix (R52). Humans can enjoy a wide selection of Mediterranean and traditional Greek dishes.

This venue welcomes the entire family, including dogs on a leash. There is a wonderful walking trail to enjoy with your pets right on the doorstep of the restaurant. You can select from three items on the dog menu. Choose either pet mince, a marrow bone or the chewy, sinewy dog snack. Call ahead to make sure that your dog’s favorite treat is in stock.

Paws in the East (Tierpoort)

If you don’t know it yet, it is time to discover this puppy paradise in the east of Pretoria. It is situated on seven hectares of farm land, which is laid out in adventurous walking trails for both dogs and their owners to enjoy. This venue operates on weekends from 7am to 6pm, but private bookings can be made outside of the operating hours. An entrance fee of R40 is charged. Groups can reserve a braai and picnic area in advance. Order a picnic basket or snack platter from the Barking Good Bites Kitchen, and be sure to spoil your good boy or girl” with an order of the liver flapjacks. You can also pamper your pooch with a grooming session on Saturdays and Sundays between 9am and 3pm. Before you head home, visit the Dog Deli for some of the best snacks and treats to tide your pets over until the next visit to this dog haven.
