Durban North’s iconic burger joint to reopen on Florida Road

Republik made waves in the Durban dining scene when they opened up on Durban North’s Adelaide Tambo Road in 2014. So when we heard they were closing their doors on Saturday 31 March we were pretty concerned. That’s not the end of the story, though — the team has announced that they will be relocating the much-loved burger eatery further south to the up-and–coming Florida Road.

While the opening date of the new spot is not yet set, locals can expect to get their burger fix again come winter 2018, where the brand will relaunch in the heritage building at 217 Florida Road.

On the reason for moving, co-owner Tayne Draper explained that the team was keen to be part of the rejuvenation project that Florida Road is currently undergoing. Property management company Urban Lime — also responsible for developments on Upper Bree Street, Long Street, Church Street and Salt River in Cape Town — has set its sights on Durban’s once-buzzing Florida Road for an urban revival. The heritage building, which previously housed Wakaberry, is currently undergoing extensive interior renovations in preparation for the burger bar’s launch later this year. “We can’t wait to see what the future holds,” says Tayne.

In the mean time, Republik fans can get their saucy burger fix at the Hillcrest branch.
