Best for

The Burger Bistro is perfect for a gathering of friends or family for a burger and beer, or a delectable milkshake. There is no play area for children, although they do have kiddies’ options on the menu.

Food

The food served is in the restaurant’s name: burgers – and more burgers. There is a large variety, from a classic Chedder melt or monkeygland, to more exotic ones such as the “Elvis” burger, which has a peanut butter sauce and bacon, and the “Wild Thing” burger, which has fried halloumi, raspberry sauce and rocket. Although burgers are the main focus, Burger Bistro also serves chicken wings and nachos.

The “oxtail” burger consists of a beef patty with melted Emmenthaler and slow-cooked oxtail for R145. The oxtail is in the sauce, not the patty, which could perhaps be made clearer on the menu. Nevertheless, it was substantial, and the flavour made up for what was lacking in oxtail.

At R139.50, “Miss Piggy” is a massive plate of food. On top of the usual lettuce and tomato there was also bacon, salami and fried halloumi. Unfortunately, the halloumi was overcooked and rubbery and the outside was crisp – a bit like a halloumi chip. All the burgers offered value for money with juicy patties and fresh ingredients.

A burger or a couple of sliders (small burgers) makes for a perfect snack – add chips and onion rings and you have a substantial meal.

The chips are hand-cut and fried to perfection, but the onion rings were thick with batter and drenched in oil, making them unpleasantly rich and not enjoyable.

For dessert, it was a toss-up between the chocolate brownie with ice cream and the chocolate mud cake. The brownie won, and it made for a sweet and substantial end to the meal.

Drinks

The restaurant has a variety of red and white wines, however, it is craft beer, cocktails and milkshakes that stand out here. Both the milkshakes and the cocktails are made to order. On Sundays, cocktails are 50% off. The milkshakes range from classics to a few more “out there” options.

Service

Service was efficient, the staff knowledgeable and neatly presented. The restaurant was quiet on arrival, but it did fill up a bit closer to lunch. Unfortunately, with and menu items not being available due to loadshedding, some customers simply left.
