Florida Road is back! The revival of Durban’s foodie strip has been a long time coming and things are definitely heating up again on this 2km tree-lined street. From wood-fired pizzas and chicken shops to killer coffee and ice-cream macaron sandwich parlours, here’s where to eat on Florida Road.

For a morning coffee run

Barn Owl

This pretty little coffee hatch located in the new Florida Fields square serves up delicious takeaway coffee to sip and enjoy on one of the benches. They also do a to-go menu with freshly prepared, wholesome eats made at their Midlands café.

Seattle Coffee Co.

Grab a spot on the sidewalk and sip on ethically sourced brews in all forms. The coffee shop also stocks some eats made on-site, including muffins, sandwiches and freshly baked pastries.

Fans of the American coffee brand head here for the signature roasts, easy bites and tree-shaded outdoor seating area, which is great for meetings or catching up on emails.

This is Durban street food at its best – a simple, limited chicken-based menu made using good-quality ingredients. Go for the tender grilled chicken strips and tjips (hand-cut, skin-on chips) with chilli sauce for an extra kick.

Bird & Co.

This chook shop from Ballito is the brainchild from the team behind Salt Rock’s BBM Café. Tuck into offerings of deboned half chickens, wings and burgers. The chickens are all free range and come in bastings of hot, mild or lemon-an-herb. You can also get your chicken atop a wood-fired pizza.

Falafel Fundi

This is the place for some of the city’s best falafels. Get yours made to order in a roti, a baguette or on a platter. You can also buy tubs of homemade hummus and baba ghanoush. It’s the perfect spot for a midweek lunch or a speedy takeaway for dinner.

This sandwich bar is also situated in Florida Fields, making it a perfect grab-and-go spot. The offering focuses on nutritiously balanced meals with options like loaded hummus slices; wholesome egg toast with Dijonnaise; poached egg and smashed avo toast; Mediterranean veg sarmies; and a variety of dressed up gourmet bagels.

Bohemian Beach Bumz

This spot dubs itself as a “420-friendly vegetarian and vegan coffee shop”. You’ll find everything from cannabis-infused chocolate and soft serve to vegan pizzas, muffins and much more.

For a slap-up steak dinner

Butcher Block

One of the newer branches on the block, this steakhouse continues to plate up satisfying meaty fare. The menu here is geared towards choice cuts of beef, wet-aged for a minimum of 21 days, as well as a wide selection of ‘land and sea’ meals.

Butcher Boys

Cater to your carnivore cravings with a variety of meaty meals from Butcher Boys. All the beef here is either wet- or dry-aged for 25 to 35 days, and is basted before being grilled to perfection on an open flame.

The menu – designed by Pete Goffe-Wood – is a celebration of flavours drawn from Nairobi and Zanzibar, all the way to the melting pot of Durban. Think spiced lentil soup, Berber-inspired seafood curry, steamed mussels slowly steamed in pale ale, and Chalmar steak topped with masala butter.

For bunny chows and rotis

Bunny Chows by Two and a Half Men

If you’re hangry and need a good bunny chow fix, this Florida Fields hatch is the spot. You’ll also find home-style trotters and beans, mutton biryani and goat curry on the menu.

Roti & Chai

Get your street food fix with food inspired by the chai and roti vendors of the streets of Mumbai and Delhi. Think tandoori and chicken naan wraps, gourmet parathas and spicy marinated paneer.

Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream

This well-loved ice-cream brand from Jozi has made its way to Florida Road. Get your favourite artisanal scoops, including flavours like birthday cake, Nutella and Oreo, rocky road, and dulce de leche. The scoop shop also serves ice-cream cakes, milkshakes and waffles.
