Friday Takeways: Where to get your sushi fix this weekend

Oishi Sushi (Cape Town & Joburg)

This sushi spot only does deliveries and offers reasonably priced classic sushi that hits all the right umami notes. If you’re after something more interesting,  try the Crunch Roll, which comes with cream cheese and sweet chilli sauce or a tuna or salmon poke bowl. In Cape Town, they deliver in the City Bowl, Atlantic Seaboard and Southern Suburbs, and in Joburg, they deliver to Bryanston and surrounds or Illovo and surrounds. Order online and view the delivery map here for a full list of areas.

Oyama Sushi Restaurant (Lynnwood Ridge, Pretoria)

The Oyama sushi is recommended, but their full takeaway list is bound to have something for everyone. Select one of the various sushi boxes on offer or choose a whole platter if you’re feeding the family. Other options include a range of appetizers (spring rolls, spring onion pancake, calamari, chicken), as well as curries, omelettes, and a variety of rice and noodle dishes. Phone them directly or order on Mr D Food or Uber Eats.

Yoshi Sushi (Kenwyn, Cape Town)

If you’re in the south of Cape Town, don’t miss some of the best sushi the ‘burbs have to offer. The box combos contain classics such as Rainbow and California Rolls, but you won’t be disappointed if you add one of the variations on these to your order. Their Family Platters also ensure that there’s more than enough for everyone. Phone or WhatsApp them on 076 735 5276 to place your order.

Sakura (Durban)

Reasonably priced, umami-packed sushi is the order of the day at Sakura. If you’re unsure of what to have, go for the Sakura Platter. Be sure to add deep-fried salmon California rolls to your order! The branch in Berea has proven to be popular and the team are now bringing their sushi delights to Durban North as well.

Oceans 8 Seafood & Sushi (Somerset West, Cape Town)

This gem has those in the know lining up to get their sushi orders in. Delicious, fresh sushi can be ordered directly from the restaurant on 084 904 9339. Definitely have a sushi platter, but don’t hesitate to try one of their other seafood offerings too. The baby kingklip comes highly recommended.

Big Mouth Sushi & Grill (Sandton, Johannesburg)

Whether you stick to the classics or choose something more adventurous (their sashimi comes with jalapenos), you are in for a treat at Big Mouth. Their sushi is packed with flavour and texture, from the creamy mayo to the crunchy tempura batter. Order via Uber Eats if you live in the area.
