Where to get delicious fish and ‘tjips’ in Durban

Best enjoyed with a view of the ocean. We’ve picked out the best places to tuck into some mouthwatering fish and chips in KZN. 

Tightline Salta (Umdloti) 

The freshest fish you will find in KZN! Customers can browse their extensive retail section, order freshly prepared fish, learn how to best fillet a fish, dine in and experience a dish off their Chef’s menu.. all within a beautifully designed and appointed space. Delivery andtakeaways available. Their street style fish and chips menu includes Line fish of the day, deep sea Hake fillets (R85), fresh Norwegian Salmon (R225), Kingklip (R147) or opt for a whole farmed Kob. Tightline is open Monday (8am-5pm), Tuesday to Saturday (8am to 9pm) andSunday (8am to 5pm). Make sure you get ahead of the crowd, they get very busy.

Macs Fish and Chips (Salt Rock)

Mac’s offers a delicious variety of seafood options like hake, calamari, prawns and curries. Their Hake is fried to perfection in a light-and-crispy, golden batter, and their ‘slap chips’ are both soft and crispy (R80). When it comes to old-school fish & chips shops, these guys are the real deal! Mac’s Fish and Chips are situated in the Tiffany’s Centre in Salt Rock and are open everyday from (9.30am-8pm). 

The Fish Plaice (Glenashley and Musgrave) 

The Fish Plaice is a family favourite for many. Their emphasis on only using the best quality fish, prawns, and calamari, together with a warm friendly service spawned a large loyal customer base. They have great value for money daily specials – Monday: 3 Hake fillets, 1 large chips, 1 fish cake, and coleslaw (R220), Wednesday: Hake and prawn combo with chips (R100), Thursday: 2 Hake fillets with chipsand coleslaw (R140) and Friday: Hake and chips (R80) and Saturday: Hake and calamari combo with chips (R105). They are open daily from 10am-8pm. 

Skippers (South Beach)

Skippers is a rustic, down-to-earth fish and chips joint serving the real deal in traditional fish and chips right by the Durban boardwalk. The meals are great value for money. Skippers is primarily known as a takeaway joint, however they do have casual seating. You’ll get hooked on their fresh and perfectly battered, crispy fish and fluffy chips. Fish and chips options include Hake (R42.90), Kingklip (R74.90, Snoek (R38.90) and Line fish of the day. Skippers is the perfect locale for an authentic family meal. Open Monday to Friday (9am to 10.30pm) and Saturday to Sunday (9am to 6pm). 

Captains Fine’s Fish Factory (Ballito and Salt Rock)

Straight from the boat to the factory, Captains Fine’s Fish Factory is a local favourite on the North Coast. Their affordable daily specials include Hake and chips (R59), Snoek and chips (R89), Linefish and chips (R149). You have the option to pick up your mealand eat it at the beach or you can sit down and enjoy your scrumptious meal. You can also buy fresh or frozen fish and seafood items to cook at home. 

Rani’s Fish Shop (Ottawa)

Situated in a fish monger, you can be sure of a fresh catch. Rani’s is all about the freshest fish and great value for money, their fish andchips range between R60-R70. Apart from the fresh and tasty fish they produce, their slap tjips are perfect, from the salt to the vinegar. You’ll be licking your fingers! Open daily from 8am to 5pm. 

The Lookout Bar (Glenwood)

Enjoy great food and friendly service while staring out onto the most amazing sea-view Durban has to offer. Every Tuesday they offer a tasty Hake and chips special for R89. Expect generous portions and meals that have a distinct home-cooked look and taste. They are open daily (12-10pm).
