Abigail’s ice cream dreams

Just as I thought ice cream weather had arrived, we’re back to boots and jackets in Cape Town. (Although it’s never a bad time to eat it.) I have had a craving lately and can’t seem to resist – even if it’s just a Cornetto.

I wrote about my longings for liquorice ice cream a few weeks back and Cold Gold came to the party. I grabbed the tub before the rest of the Eat Out team could get their paws on it. It turned out to be perfect: creamy, not too sweet and with just the right amount of liquorice. I was also quite relieved that it wasn’t pitch black as I was rushing out to an event (and inky teeth wouldn’t do).

I recently had dinner at Arugula Bistro in Welgemoed, where owner Neil Swart makes his own ice cream as well as pasta, bread and charcuterie. His ice cream is absolutely crazy and he should definitely have a gelato shop on the side, or at least a pop up caravan close to where I stay. Muizenberg beach would be perfect.

He made a perfect rum-and-raisin version with just the right mouth feel, and his salted caramel and marshmallow-Marie biscuit flavours are a bit of heaven.

To go with his lemon tart, he made a gorgeous, deep-hued blueberry sorbet that was full of intense flavours.

Apparently Tasha’s in Constantia has opened a cutesy ice cream shop. I haven’t visited yet, but I’m looking forward to a double-scoop of pistachio and coffee, or maybe make it a triple… I couldn’t resist the cherry either!
