Insta-worthy restaurants: Where to snap the perfect pic this summer

For the avid Instagrammers and aspiring photographers out there, we reveal our favourite spots for taking the best pics around the country.

Cargo Hold (Point, Durban)

Be mesmerised by spectacular views of marine life from this restaurant that’s actually the stern of the Phantom Ship. Cargo Hold shares its tank with the aquarium at uShaka Marine World so guests are able to dine within a few inches from a massive shark tank!
The menu offers classic favourites (steaks, pork belly, lamb shank) and the chance to tuck into the freshest seafood platters while a curious shark swims passed your table. Snap a silhouette of the marine life behind your wine glass to give your Insta feed a daring aesthetic. Call in advance to book a table alongside the tank.

Morning Glory (Parkwood, Johannesburg)

Succulent plants, arches, pale pink walls and a catchy neon sign that reads “rise and grind”, this trendy new brunch spot in Parkwood ticks all the boxes for an indulgent weekend brunch that looks as good as it tastes. Locals laud it for its well-priced coffee and its extensive breakfast spread that showcases delightful combinations such as their bacon-and-brie sarmie and their Cornflake-coated French toast with berries and crème fraiche.  Take a boomerang of mimosas clinking against the neon sign for a cheeky take on rising and grinding on the weekend.

Ethos (Morningside, Johannesburg)

“Mediterranean flare” sums up the look and feel of this ultra-contemporary restaurant that features an olive tree right in the centre of its dining area. Here, every picturesque corner demands a pic. Make your way to their spectacular bar that boasts a starlight ceiling, panoramic windows and a carved wall panel. Graze on their generous list of tapas including keftedes, pickled baby octopus and spicy prawn gambas, and don’t forget to take an #OOTD (Outfit of the Day) pic amid the Mediterranean splendour.

FYN Restaurant (City Bowl)

The elaborate ceiling installation inside this fine-dining establishment is inspired by the soroban – a Japanese abacus. As guests enter the front of house, they are greeted by commanding wooden beads that dangle from the ceiling, instantly transporting them to a magical place that’s somewhere in between Africa and Japan. The menu, much like the décor, is a fusion of Japanese classics with a South African twist. Whip out your camera for the food itself, which is plated beautifully, and do use the ceiling installation as the perfect backdrop for the ultimate #foodie post.

Gigi Rooftop (City Bowl)

A tropical jungle slap bang in the middle of the city is what you get when you visit this cosy rooftop bar in St Georges Mall. Call to reserve a courtyard table flanked by large leafy plants, bright plush sofas and breathtaking city views. The emerald green swimming pool is their Insta focal point while their wooden deck marked with a flirty “Hello Gorgeous” welcome sign is iconic too. Tuck into light, fuss-free meals and stay for memorable sundowners during golden hour, where every single picture is bound to be Instagrammable.
