Jean-Vincent Ridon secures title of Best Sommelier of South Africa 2023

On September 16, 2023, the South African wine and hospitality industry witnessed a remarkable day as the South African Sommeliers Association (SASA) hosted the highly anticipated Best Sommelier of South Africa 2023 competition at the scenic Hazendal Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. The highlight of the event was the triumphant victory of Jean-Vincent Ridon, a prominent figure in the field, who represented the Sommelier’s Academy.

Chairman of SASA, Spencer Fondaumiere, applauded Jean-Vincent’s achievement, stating, “This is a monumental occasion. Jean-Vincent’s victory, after four attempts, serves as a lesson in perseverance, determination and self-belief. He has contributed significantly to our industry, and his success will undoubtedly inspire many. Congratulations to him and to all the semi-finalists, as well as the other two finalists. Each has an inspiring story. I would like to thank the SASA team for delivering a world-class event at a world-class venue.”

The competition was intense, with Laurie Cooper of Abingdon Wine Estate in KZN securing the runner-up position, followed closely by Tapiwa Jamu of Ivory Manor Boutique Hotel in Pretoria, who secured the third position.

Best Sommelier Finalists

Jean-Vincent reflected on the high-caliber competition, saying, “When I saw the level of skill exhibited by my fellow competitors, I realized how far the sommelier profession has progressed since my first competition in 2016. This victory is even more precious to me. Having finished as the runner-up in the last three contests, I hope that this final attempt will inspire the next generation to never shy away from challenges and to keep learning, as the rewards can be immensely gratifying. I will strive to impart this message to all my students.”

The panel of judges included esteemed figures such as the world’s seventh-best sommelier, Jo Wessels; Wikus Human of Marble and Saint Restaurants and the 2021 Best Sommelier of South Africa; Wayve Kolevsohn of The Royal Portfolio; and Chef Callan Austin of Dusk Restaurant.

SASA General Manager Erica Taylor, the driving force behind the event’s organization, said, “The talent displayed today was absolutely world-class. This competition not only highlighted individual excellence but also emphasizes South Africa’s growing prominence in the global wine and hospitality sectors.”

The event’s success was in part attributed to the steadfast partnership with Stellenbosch Wine Routes, which has been a longstanding supporter. Elmarie Rabe of Stellenbosch Wine Routes expressed her pleasure in being part of such a significant event, emphasising that the competition is a celebration of the excellence found in South Africa’s wine and hospitality.
