Meatless Mondays at The Set

By now, most up-to-date foodies have heard about the Meatless Monday phenomenon that's taken the world by storm. Lesser known is the fact that Cape Town is the first African city to officially endorse the environmentally friendly movement.

In solidarity, Victoria Junction's The Set Restaurant has pulled out all the stops in making vegetarian feasts of note each Monday.

Executive chef Mynhardt de Jongh has carefully crafted an exclusively meatless menu with the emphasis on flavour combinations. Gingered butternut soup is paired with fennel bulb fritters, asparagus and poached quail eggs are given the royal treatment with slivers of Kalahari truffle and citrus breadcrumbs, and fiery feta-filled jalapeño poppers are tempered with a fig, apricot and cashew wild rice pilaf.

Interesting touches include the palate cleanser inspired by a refreshing street-side drink De Jongh encountered during his time spent in Thailand: a shooter glass of cream soda, poached water chestnuts, coconut milk and plenty of ice.

A three-course set menu costs R150 per person. For more information, call 021 418 1234.
