It’s hard to keep count of the plethora of restaurants popping up along Cape Town’s Bree Street these days. Hiding behind dusty-pink doors, Mulberry & Prince is the newest member of the upper end of the trendy food strip. This stylish kitchen and bar, located at 12 Pepper Street on the corner of Bree, is set to open on 21 April 2016, serving edgy new-American cuisine.

Named after two streets in New York City, Mulberry & Prince is the brainchild of foodie friends, co-owners and chefs Cornel Mostert and Cynthia Rivera, who met during their studies at The Culinary Institute of America.

The restaurant’s focus will be on the fusion of South African and American, drawing on the experiences of Cynthia, who grew up in New York, and Cornel, who was born in the Mother City. The two have spent time in some of the world’s top international kitchens, including Noma in Copenhagen, Alinea in Chicago and The Modern in New York City, and plan to inject these exciting influences into the food at their new space.

The cuisine at the new spot will focus on shared feasting, with small to midsize plates to encourage a spontaneous and communal vibe. The menu will be inspired by Cornel and Cynthia’s travels, boasting a “new American” approach that fuses different food styles with a contemporary twist.

Diners can look forward to dishes like creamy stracciatella with lovage and charred bread; cod with an ajo-blanco-inspired sauce; and slow-cooked pork shoulder in brodo with burnt leeks and cucumbers. Another highlight from the menu will be their take on ricotta gnudi with parmesan broth and mushrooms.

As for the drinks, at the moment the restaurant don’t have their liquor license but guests are welcome to bring their own. In future, the beverage offering will focus on natural wines, craft beers and clever cocktails.
