Number 14: Jordan Restaurant

Jordan Restaurant was named number 14 in South Africa at the 2017 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards. To find out why, watch the video and read the review below.

Food

George Jardine is one of the gastronauts of the Cape Winelands, and along with head chef Kyle Burn, he ensures that Jordan Restaurant continues to be a fine-dining landmark. The focus on the food-and-wine pairing menus gives the kitchen team the opportunity to show its skill and versatility. A benchmark for simplicity, George’s interpretations of South African fare put a contemporary spin on top-quality ingredients sourced from artisanal suppliers and growers. Nothing here is ever over-wrought and each dish showcases natural taste and texture.

Enjoy a wonderful bread board with aioli, farm butter and hummus, fresh from the bakery next door. The menu changes daily, but you might start with a choice between yuzu-cured salmon with young organic beets, or a colourful warm salad of gnocchi with crispy kale, smoked walnut and caramelised apple. For mains you could have slivers of pan-roasted rump with caramelised onions and potato-and-pancetta gratin.

For dessert, the choice might be between a divine honey-and-poppy-seed soufflé or aromatic spiced churros with Valrhona hot chocolate.

Each earthy composition, layered with flavour, shows exquisite balance. The plates, featuring rustic green and brown tones, are garnished with bright splashes of yellow nasturtium, and are enriched by sublime purées and smoky vegetables.

Vegetarians are spoiled with dishes like a terrine of goat’s cheese and pepper, or a piquant caramelised white-onion tart with aged gruyère, walnuts and sun-dried pear.

Every ingredient appears to be meticulously selected to highlight flavours, allowing the whole always to be greater than the sum of the parts. If you’re looking for the wow factor, this is the place to come.
