TANG restaurant expands its offering with a Cape Town branch this spring

TANG, the luxury Asian restaurant and bar that has taken Joburg by storm, is heading to the V&A Waterfront later this year. This new location emulates the iconic locale of its Sandton address, overlooking Nelson Mandela Square.

Nicky van der Walt, the restaurateur behind TANG (which forms part of his MIRAMAR Collection), says: “Cape Town is very dear to my heart. It is truly an international city and well known as a great gastronome destination. The V&A Waterfront is the city’s jewel, attracting millions of local and international tourists, so it was an absolute no brainer that the second TANG would open there. You simply cannot beat the magnificent view of Table Mountain and the yacht harbour from TANG V&A Waterfront!”

In addition to unparalleled views, guests can also expect TANG’s signature take on contemporary Japanese izakayas and classic Cantonese cuisines for which the Joburg-based restaurant has become so well known.

Group Executive Chef Vixa Kalenga, who created the original TANG menu, will oversee both the Johannesburg and Cape Town restaurants along with Executive Chef Tanki Ernest Tsosane who will head up the operations in Cape Town. Tanki was at Nobu for nine years, having worked in Cape Town, Saudi Arabia and Tokyo.

While the V&A Waterfront is a location drawcard, diners familiar with the original TANG will be aware of the restaurant’s luxurious yet edgy design. Award-winning designer Tristan Du Plessis is responsible for the interiors of the new TANG and you can be sure it will add an element of extra glam to Cape Town.

Alex Kabalin, Executive for Retail, at the V&A Waterfront said TANG’s arrival is part of the precinct’s “revamp of our restaurant line-up”.

“TANG is a good example of the new type of restaurants we are attracting, and they will bring a new and unique flavour to the contemporary and sophisticated selection of sensory dining experience we have at the Waterfront in a setting that we are sure our visitors will enjoy,” he says.
