Thursday 25 March was International Waffle Day: Here are our favourite waffle spots across South Africa

If you’re looking for golden, crispy waffles, this is the list for you! Order your waffles for breakfast, lunch or dinner – and choose the toppings you prefer.

Countrywide

Spur steak ranches
Spur’s waffles are the classic dessert that we all know and love. Available countrywide, the traditional ‘home-baked’ Spur Waffle, topped with caramel syrup is served with cream or soft serve and starts at R32.90. Other options include Bar-One sauce or Oreo crumble.

Wimpy
The original roadhouse, Wimpy, has been serving padkos waffles since forever. Plain waffles with ice cream and golden syrup start at R42.90 and are the perfect treat with a Wimpy coffee.

KwaZulu Natal

Waffle on Café, Westwood Mall
With dozens of delicious toppings on their fresh, hot waffles, it will be hard to choose just one! And with seven different ice cream flavours to mix and match (such as maple, butterscotch or chocolate) you may have to visit Waffle on Café more than once.

Plan B Dessertery
The fully-loaded waffle cones are a real treat, but we also love the crispy fried churros from Plan B. Find them in Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

Gauteng

Lexi’s Eatery
Lexi’s is a great spot if you’re looking for delicious and creative plant-based meal options. Their waffles are famous for a reason – the Choc Chip Waffles will have you swooning! Two gluten-free vanilla protein waffles with dark chocolate chunks served with banana, cacao nibs, desiccated coconut, coconut cream and vegan Nutella, starting at R70. Find Lexi’s at various Gauteng locations (Sandton, Modderfontein, Rosebank, Hazelwood) as well as their new spot in Sea Point, Cape Town.

Yummyness Waffle Bar
Yummyness has a great menu of different waffle and crepe options, available at their locations in Melville and Kempton Park. Try the New Yorker – crispy bacon pieces baked into a waffle topped with maple syrup (R60). They also have a spot in Stellenbosch if you’re in the Winelands.

Mulberry and Prince, CBD
This is the larnie brunch spot in Cape Town’s city centre. Their sweet and savoury waffles are legendary, and they come with all the trimmings: fresh berries, smoked salmon or crispy chicken, and lots and lots of maple syrup.

The Creamery, Newlands and Durbanville
The Creamery specialises in all-natural, locally sourced ice cream, but it’s the waffles that will have you coming back again and again. Their secret waffle recipe is made with malt and fresh eggs and cooked on waffle irons specially imported from Belgium. Add a scoop (or two) of any of the seasonal ice cream flavours such as sea salt caramel, choc chip cookie dough, yoghurt blackberry swirl or hot cross bun.

Tasha’s Constantia
Ohhhh yes, it’s one of the best waffle spots south of the Equator: Tasha’s Constantia. Their friendly and professional staff will take care of you, while you feast on waffles, ice cream and all the toppings. This one almost looks healthy.

This seafood and burger restaurant in the quaint fishing village of Struisbaai also serves the most incredible waffles. Plan a trip – it will be worth it to taste the waffle with banana, maple syrup, pecan nuts and vanilla ice cream (R80).
