Owner's description

Beira Altas family tradition is to cook from the heart with recipes handed down from generation to generation, which has evolved into Portuguese Cuisine with an African Influence. The menu offers flame grilled chickens and platters piled high with pan-fried prawns, smothered with a blend of spices, olive oil, lemon juice and garlic.

The South African desire for red meat remains unabated so Beira Alta serves unashamedly large portions, smothered in chef’s unique sauces. Seafood however, remains the top seller. Traditional recipes are served plain or spicy.

    Definitely money worth. Very relaxed
Love Portuguese food but was extremely disappointed when I ate there. Granted my hubby and I ate off of a "Specials" menu, but portion sizes and quality of food was not great at all. My main meal portion appeared to be a starter portion size. Service was not great. Bottled water was grossly overpriced.
We travel 100km+ just to go and have their delicious peri peri prawns and chips. Having travelled through out SA can say in all honesty this is the only place where we have never been disappointed. Taking into account we have to travel so far just for a meal and then return home says a lot. Wonderful people and absolutely fantastic food.
Made my first visit to Beira Alta recently on my birthday with my husband and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The prawns were really well-prepared and delicious. Service was great. Good atmosphere. Although a bit way out for me, i would love to go back soon!
I am Portuguese and one year ago I have eaten the most delicious Bacalhau à Brás that looked and tasted like my mum's. I have sent a photo to my parents, and promised them to take them to Beira Alta. I just did that. Unfortunatelly the memories of my delicious meal were vanish. It started with the slow and poor service, the Portuguese rolls were not Portuguese at all, they were not warm as they used to be. For starters we ordered Prawn Bisk and Caldo Verde, it took 30 minutes to come to the table, after complaining twice. Then we ordered the famous Bacalhau À Brás. Disgusting ... Simply atrocious! Smelling badly, and it looked like baby vomit. We left very disappointed and sad. Clearly Beira Alta is not it used to be and for sure not a good representation of the famous and delicious Portuguese food.
