Zero stars . We loved burgundy it was one of our favorite places . But it’s off our list now . Went there on Friday. After being chased away by Fabio’s manageress. Yes, it was load shedding but they have a massive generator . All items on the menu were available. The waitress was not attentive, forgetful. I had to ask for ice 3 times untill another waitress brought me some in a glass with a fish one in the outside! It was 20-20- we were informed that the kitchen closes at 9. I ordered skilpadjies as a starter. The rest of the table ordered mains . We ordered at 8 30. The skilpadjies arrived after 9 together with the other three main courses. Ok..... disaster number 2. The skilpadjies were raw and bloody on the inside after one bite . I sent it back . Then cancelled it because my main would have come much later thN the other guests would’ve finished the meal . And I e lost my appetite for the raw liver. I ordered a seafood platter. Firstly the mussels were dry as biltong . They in the past use to serve the mussels in a bowl with sauce on the platter but not this time . The calamari was chewy the hake was more batter than fish and the fish was mushy like mash potato and not flakey and fresh . The batter was over cooked and very brown. I didn’t even touch the fish balls . The other gues’s silver fish wasn’t delicious and my mothers burger was horrible . We then ordered dom Pedro - it was like water - thin consistency almost made of melted ice cream . It was pure liquid. I called the male manager and said this is not a dom Pedro there’s no ice cream it’s wTery , it dropped off the straw - he told me it’s because I added a double shot of kahlua/ I told him I’m not stupid don’t entertain me with stupidity- I have had dom Pedro’s before- this is milk mixed with kahlua. The other lady also had a single shit of kahlua and it was watery too . By the way the waitress forgot my seafood platter order and I had to wait longer. I seems like the kitchen was in a hurry to finish by nine and messed it up . I’ve never had such a bad experience at this place . And yes they had a generator- the power came back at 2020. They never said they couldn’t prepare certain dishes so do t blame Eskom- they have a massive generator. The service the food was pathetic and the attitude of the male manager who hinted that I’m stupid because I don’t know my dom Pedro’s . Never again. You are a horrible establishment now in Y my experience and a total waste of mo ry . Good bye - no need to reply.
This place! I mean the view is a given, but they make it even more special by the great service and super friendly staff and the food is pretty fabulous as well. I remember many many moons ago putting my hand up to do the wine deliveries to Hermanus when our delivery guys were super busy. It was an absolute treat doing the deliveries in and around town and finishing off with my last delivery & lunch at Burgundy - all in a days work I'll say. Keep going guys you are legendary in Hermanus.
Feeling famished after a long walk along the sea front, we rested our eyes on the peaceful sight of families enjoying a Sunday lunch and whale watching. We were met by friendly faces and soon found a table on the front line under a tree with the help of a waitress who was laid back and yet efficient. Simple but sufficient wine menu, bottle or by the glass. The menu is traditional and well balanced, but it appears that sea food is the primary interest and naturally so. Delicious looking seafood platters were being carried all around us, but we decided on fried hake and the "Banting Burger". It did not take long for our food to arrive but it would have been worth an even longer wait. The hake was fresh and done to perfection, while the "BB" (a first for me) was a combination of every good that is savoury and the accompanying sauces were delicious too. It was such a pleasant meal that we decided to stay for coffees and continue watching the whale calf frolicking in the bay from our vantage point.
For the best breakfast in Hermanus do head down to the end of the road where the waves and views are plentiful. I had a quick break in-between work responsibilities and being from Jozi, it needed to be quick. It felt like I won the lotto and went to heaven. The ever so friendly waiter was so accommodating and fast on his feet offering substitutions for my "no-gluten please". I had the eggs Benedict - wow! From the sensational visual pleasure to the complete satisfaction and excitement of my taste buds this was one for the books. The cuppa-chino, more foam no milk was superfluous. Needles to say, my staff found me there after hours still indulging in the moment and not wanting to return to Jozi.
The Burgundy location is unbeatable, but that is all that it has got going for itself. New owners mean new very high prices. And the very rude manager Pieter Nel is still there, addressing me in Afrikaans on arrival (he knows me well and that I speak English). He refused me permission to order any food, without explanation, despite many years of sending guests to the restaurant. Not recommended.
