A word of advice: come hungry. Come looking for generous portions of sticky-fingered, lip-licking juicy grills. Come for the insane range of milkshakes. And come here ready to make choices.
For starters, you’ll need to choose between ribs, steaks or burgers. There are salads and starters, but they’re mere sideshows here. The choice of beef, pork and lamb ribs will certainly tempt, as will the prime cuts of steak.
But it’s char-grilled burgers that made Gibson’s famous, and there are no easy choices here, either. Gibson’s offers its burgers in two sizes: 200g regular or 160g small. Then those burgers come in 49 different varieties – yes, 49 – so you certainly can’t say there isn’t even one that tempts you.
Alongside the standard beef burger options – Philly Cheese being a safe bet – and vegan or vegetarian options, the standouts here are the Gourmet Burgers. Like the towering The Ultimate burger with beef, chicken and bacon, or the Mex-Tex stuffed with cheese, guacamole and nachos. The combo may be crazy, but the basics are done well here: brioche bun with a quality handmade patty cooked to medium.
For dessert? A(nother) milkshake is your best bet, but you’ll also find chocolate brownies, sundaes and New York cheesecake to fill any gaps.
The signature sip here is the milkshakes, and any of the 200+ flavours and styles will make a perfect partner to the generous burgers and ribs. There are liqueur-rich adult versions, vegan options and health choices available too. Extra marks to Gibson’s for the use of paper straws. The extensive wine list is focused on the big-name brands, but it’s fairly priced and offers a good selection by the glass. The craft beers are more adventurous, with a range of local breweries in the fridge, and a half-dozen on tap.
Waiters handle the constant Waterfront bustle with ease and a smile.
The indoor section of this sizeable restaurant has a vaguely retro-industrial feel, but it’s looking a little dated. Rather bag a table on the terrace with fine views over the harbour.

There's a reason this restaurant has won multiple awards
They definitely serve the best burgers - the options are endless. If burgers are not your thing then try their pork ribs. They are truly finger licking good. They also have the biggest milkshake menu I've ever seen.
This place is surely a crowd pleaser.
Recently went back to Gibson’s and I must say, I’m hardly disappointed. Thank you for always serving quality food. There is always great service and even on a cold day it’s the one restaurant where you will have patrons sitting outside
Super meals in very pleasant surroundings, attentive staff, definitely worth a visit, and ready to go again with family and friends! The food is great and the menu gives a lot of delicious surprises. There is no doubt that you get value for money at Gibson’s Gourmet Burgers & Ribs!
Wow! Wow! Wow! That is all I can say when I think of the burgers at this joint! Like you think you’ve had good burgers in your life, but think again! This place has ruined every otber burger place for me! Their burgers are as if a choir of angels was singing Ed Sheeran lyrics straight onto your tongue! Majestic! And their milkshakes are not to be ignored either! This place knows taste and for this reason it will be know as my favourite burger joint in all of Cape Town!
In other news, the ambiance is very nice as well. If you sit outside you have a nice view of Table Mountain. Perfect for Instagram worthy photos of your burgers and shakes!
One complaint though, and I hate to say it, is the service that was way to slow. And I was in my happy place because of the amazing burgers, but I still noticed the long, long, looooong wait before our waiter came to our table. This happened every single time. My girl even had to get up and find the waiter to ask for our check because I swear we waited an hour from when she delivered our desert.
Overall, a very good place. Will definitely be going again. I honestly hope that they see this comment and give a huge compliment to the chefs but also a stern talking to to the waiters!
I still want to try every burger on the menu, but I keep ordering the only one that I’ve tasted cause it simply pleased my tastebuds
