Graham Howe

The focus is on hearty and wholesome farmhouse fare on this historic 1698 cattle, sheep and wheat farm. The locals flock here to enjoy the full farmer breakfast with farm eggs, home-made boerewors, freshly baked country bread and jam, signature gammon cheese waffle or smoked salmon potato hash. Vegetarians are treated to a gourmet spin on breakfast, from a warm quinoa salad with mushrooms, baby spinach and curried cauliflower to home-made granola.

Inspired by fresh seasonal produce, chef Juan van Deventer creates a lunch menu in his farmhouse kitchen that’s equally big on flavour. For mains, try his hero harissa lamb ragout on soft polenta with Turkish apricots or roasted pork belly, plated with white bean casserole and chorizo. Every dish is paired with the winemaker’s choice of the farm’s own wines by the glass. A lighter lunch menu offers creative soups of the day and salads like basil spinach couscous or quinoa and sweet potato salad.

Leave room to share a traditional farm dessert of burnt sweet potato pie with caramel custard.

Explore the farm’s acclaimed own wines by the glass and bottle at cellar-door prices – or the home-made iced rooibos tea (lemon, apple or berry mint).

Warm and welcoming, and attentive to your needs.

Set in the restored old 1767 mule stable, the interior is as cosy as the old blue Dutch tile, crooked wooden beams and original stone floor.

Best for…
A leisurely brunch with a long view in the winelands.

The chef Juan van Deventer and restaurant manager Maret van Deventer are an excellent power house couple. Their menu selection changes every season, which is the best reason to come back all year round. The food will impress the most intricate palate. The marriage of all the flavours & textures together is always impeccable. The wines are also exquisite and pairs very well with all the dishes served. Today my gammon cheese waffle was just beautiful. A mouth full of flavour bursts. My desert the sticky toffee pudding. Excellent finish to our brunch. The staff is so tentative and caring. I highly recommend Groot Phesantekraal
