Mamma Roma is a wonderful place with the greatest service, ambiance and food quality as a combination. perfect for celebrations or just a great meal with friends
The food took forever to come out. I was disappointed that they do not make all their own pasta anymore. Their homemade ravioli used to be excellent. The kingklip which we were assured was fresh, was still frozen in the inside and watery on the plate. A wedge of lemon that had previously been used was placed on the plate. The veal was supposed to be medium but came out rare and it was tasteless. Red wine at room temperature does not mean warm wine. My friend asked for a glass of hot TAP water and we were charged R5 for it. The waitress kept on bumping into us as they passed because of lack of space. It was unpleasant to hear the owner/chef shouting abuse in the background. As a chef I can understand that things can go wrong but when clients are paying top prices you need to give quality and service.
What a little gem. My crumbed veal chop was only ruined by the fact that my wife had the marginally better veal with porcini mushrooms - which gave me instant food envy. Thick cut, home-made chips were my starch choice while my other half loved the mash. A great wine list from blaady expensive (for British tourists) to reasonable pricing on local favourites - like the bottle of value Alto Rouge we ordered (Note: it was month end!) My wife had the fresh oysters to start while the butter asparagus starter left me craving a couple more spears. Service was a little slow, and the clientele a little Shady Pines and blue rinse, but it's easy to understand why this place is a local favourite.
The service was very poor and bordered on rude. I'm sure the food is great but the service was so poor we left after 40 minutes. Emailed the restaurant twice after this and they never had the courtesy to respond.

With Wijnhuis Newlands closed for an extended period, and which from the outside, now sports a very glamorous interior, one wonders what legendary founder of La Perla, and the Wijhuises, Emiliano must think of it all. I'm afraid the corporate and residential community in the area, have discovered and rediscovered the value and personalised service, with realistic pricing of other venues in the area, such as longtimers Mamma Roma in Newlands. You are recognised, your every need is taken care of and its affordable and friendly. Their well deserved support by a good cross section of Capetonians will I believe and deservedly so, continue.
