I have already raised my concerns with the manager, but will do so in writing here. She suggested raising my concerns once I have "calmed down", so here they are.
We made an online reservation for 7pm on Saturday, 22 February 2025. We received two notifications post the reservation, making it very clear that we need to be there by no later than 15 minutes after our reservation time. We arrived at 7pm sharp, only to be told to wait as our table was not ready due to a double booking (exact words). After our table was cleaned, the host continued to attend to other guests before taking us to our table.
Another (white) couple had arrived just before us without a reservation and were taken to their table before us. So the fun began.
Once at the table, we waited nearly 10 minutes before a server arrived asking if we had been helped and proceeded to hand us menus and hand us off to Bongani. He took our drinks order, and seemed quite annoyed that just my wife ordered a drink, with me suggesting ordering a bit later. Our drinks arrived shortly after and we proceeded to place our dinner order (bearing in mind that this was already a good half an hour since we arrived). Whilst taking our order, Bongani had to go attend to another (white) couple behind us who had ordered the lobster, citing that their meal was "complicated". In the meanwhile, the other (white) couple who had arrived just before us without the reservation were already eating their starters.
I tried to order an arrabiata pasta with the cheese wheel, but this was too complicated to do, and Bongani could not explain why, just that it was not possible. I have had cheese wheel pastas in many places before and in a few different countries with a variety of pasta dishes and this was never a problem before. He proceeded to bring in the manager to further outline that this would not be possible. I conceded and we waited for our food. The (white) couple who had arrived just before us without the reservation were already on their mains (lobster) by 8pm, whilst we had not even had a sniff of food. By 8.15pm, we had decided that we had had enough and vacated. I am not sure if it was the fact that we are Indian, or did not order lobster (which could affect the tip that Bongani received), but there was something clearly not right here.
We travelled all the way from Centurion, late at night with a 13-month old only to have the single, most disgustingly racist experience at Monte, bearing in mind that this was the first we had been to Monte since our child was born. Having spoken to the manager explaining our gripes, she insists that she is not racist, having been born here in SA and that she is the only white person working there. I accept that, which only lends credence to the fact that she is utterly clueless about the behaviours of her staff. I sincerely hope that all the promises of reviewing the camera footage of our night there materialize and that racists like Bongani cease to work in the hospitality industry ever again.

We made a booking 29 September for a 40th birthday that we would host. The person who was arranging this spoke to a lady by the name of Sandra to agreed to have us and my wife even made a trip there to look at the venue. They agreed we can have a separate menu etc. Today, our friend who was arranging with the venue calls to check if they have ribs whilst on the call, Olga mentions that she was meaning to call us to say they can't accommodate us and they will have to cancel our booking. After a back and forth with my friend, Olga mention that Jeanette, who seems to be the owner has cancelled our booking and has the audacity to say that she is not here to be politically correct but she is running a restaurant. This is because there is a bigger function taking place and all of a sudden there is not place for the little people. It is a month ago when we made our booking, and they cancel a few days before the function. This is CAPITALISM at it's best. No regard for people, no integrity, doesn't matter what you do to others to get ahead, it's all about MONEY!!!
WORST PART
She said to my friend “not to be judgemental, but black people are always late, your guests might not show up at 7pm”. My friend responded that she is being racist, and she does not know her or her guests.
Jeanette's response “if you want to play the race card that is fine with me, I am trying to run a restaurant here, I am not trying to be politically correct.”
- People still talk like this in 2022...PATHETIC!!!
Had they mentioned it was not possible when we called 29 September this would not be an issue, but at this stage, people have been invited, arrangements made and they drop us at the very last minute not concerned whether or not we have an alternative, as long as their BOTTOM LINE is met. This is disgraceful and leaves a very bad taste in my mouth to think this is how people treat their clientele.

Verdicchio Restaurant and Wine Cellar at Montecasino offers amazing ambiance, fantastic food and superb service. The dim lighting makes for a romantic setting which is perfect for dates and special occasions - my wife is on my case for us to return! Unsurprisingly the eatery is a popular one and you might have to wait for a table. Not to worry as you can either relax with a pre-drink or walk around the complex and the staff will call you when a table opens up.
That is what happened to us but in fairness that was the last thing I could complain about. The waiter was always on hand, made great suggestions and was very passionate - how rare to find a waiter who loves his job these days! The food itself was perfectly prepared, using fresh ingredients and after starting with incredible Italian bread and butter, I had a wonderful wild mushroom & duck soup followed by a glorious pasta a la med (shrimps, calamari, & mussels in a creamy white wine sauce) as a main and then came the piece de resistance - coppa di chocolate! My wife opted for il cocktail di prawn, duck picasso (roasted in black pepper, red wine and black cherry sauce) and magnificent malva pudding. We exchanged a bite from each other's respective dishes to confirm we were indeed in heaven. I could feel the angels in my mouth!
Prices are quite reasonable too in spite of the upmarket setting, which is good when you know you have to take the wife back for more! But even if prices rose significantly, it would still be worthwhile as it is a true treat. In additional to the al a carte offering, Verdichhio also offers set menus that can be viewed on their website: www.verdicchio.co.za
