This hotel and spa with stunning views, beautiful grounds and trout-filled dams, is in the heart of the Mpumalanga Highlands just outside Dullstroom, about 2½ hours’ drive from Johannesburg.
An extensive menu of lighter meals is served throughout the day in The Terrace, which has gorgeous views that only hint at the expanse of the grounds. The Highland Platter has generously sliced cold cuts, trout pâté, tapenade and various cheeses. The large Waldorf salad with toasted walnuts, sliced Granny Smith apples and cubed gorgonzola, is topped with a deliciously creamy Caesar dressing. For mains, the slow-braised oxtail in red wine with natural jus is served with fluffy white rice and seasonal garden vegetables. The Flying Scotsman restaurant offers a set four-course dinner menu that changes daily depending on what’s in season. You don’t need the Dutch apple cake, but it would be a sacrilege to visit and not try this delectable indulgence!
