Cape Town’s cult wine bar, Publik, opens branch in hot Gauteng location

Bolton Road in Rosebank is about to get even hotter with the addition of a brand new neighbourhood wine bar. The team behind Cape Town’s popular haunt, Publik Wine Bar, has announced plans to open a branch in Joburg this February.

The intimate new wine bar, which will be located next-door to Coalition at 2 Bolton Road, will boast a similar offering to that of the Cape Town space, with a constantly changing list of artisanal wines from lesser-known producers along with charcuterie and cheeses and other snacks. Think bottles from Donkiesbaai, Raised by Wolves and Lowerland paired with bowls of giant olives, rosemary-roasted nuts, prosciutto and aged gouda. The wine selection will be predominately local, with a small list of rare and foreign options, too.

“Our objective is to create a space that helps wine lovers discover wines beyond the usual grapes and commercial brands,” says owner David Cope. There’ll also be local craft beers, G&Ts and a slightly expanded selection of whiskies, which will be exclusive to the Rosebank outlet.

David has partnered up with Jaco Smit (formerly of La Boqueria and 2018 top 20 restaurant Fermier), who will be managing the Joburg bar. “He’s got great wine knowledge and hospitality experience, and brings with him professionalism and, equally important, an enthusiasm for wines that will pass onto the guests,” says David.
