Food
Take a seat outside and enjoy the view while you devour laden breakfast and lunch dishes – including the likes of old-school fish and chips, a 1kg mussel dish and the popular ‘seafood threesome’. You’ll also find burgers and curries on the terrace menu. Outs of season you can opt for ‘smarter’ food off the bistro menu – the likes of steaks, bouillabaisse and scallops. Well-known as a family-friendly destination, it has a kiddies’ menu with plenty to keep the little guys happy.

Wine
Easy-drinking, crowd-pleasing choices.

Service
Good.

Ambience
A busy local haunt that’s a lifesaver for those with kids and is enjoyable on a pleasant weekend afternoon (don’t expect the same when the wind’s blowing).

And...
It often has live music gigs on weeekends. (VS, September 2010)

  • The waitrons are fabulous, the management was shocking in terms of how this restaurant was run. After I tried to give constructive criticism of the manager's customer service, he promptly order us to leave the restaurant, not to pay our bill and threatened to call security, which he did. I have never been treated in such an aggressive manner, just because the manager couldn't take constructive advise. I have to further add, that the owner was just as bad and non apologetic. We will never be back!

  • Service has always been hit and miss, food standard beach bar fare, location to die for and when our boys were younger the sand pit play area a God send, however ....... Now our boys (@10 and 12) have outgrown the play area and after a truly awful visit today (the first in a couple of years) we WON'T be going back! The service as ever was average at best, the food was truly awful, mean, awfully presented dishes, soggy fish and frozen coated chips, awful burger and tasteless mussels. After finding the fourth hair in my fish and chips decided returning it may be the best option! The child on the table next to ours insisted on playing football in the seating area, his parents seemed to blissfully unaware that this may affect other diners or that his ball had hit our table 3 times, this in a restaurant with a sunken play area and a stretch of beach literally a stones throw away to play ball on. A miserable experience :( thought we'd give Dunes another try after staying away for a while but never again!

  • Myself and fifteen others ate at Dunes 7 February 2014, we had guests celebrating their engagement who had on their last night in Cape Town chosen Dunes for a farewell dinner. All the line fish served to us during the evening was dry and bland, chips and wedges where cold and "side salad" consisted of lettuce, two tomatoes and onion. The calamari was tough and almost inedible, not once did a manager or chef come to our table and ask how everything was. We will not be returning to Dunes, and the most disappointing part was the beautiful view could not substitute for the awful and disappointing food.

  • Discounted winter menu is a treat. On a freezing cold night, the warm interior was welcoming. I had the Steak Fillet, and as a very selective meat eater, this steak was awesome. The pepper sauce was a killer . I will be back !

  • Dunes is an institution in Hout Bay, and remains a haven for families and those with pets. It does however, have quiet corners up and downstairs, and Quentin Spickernell and his team have freshened it all up. We enjoyed a delicious Dutch style pea and ham soup - the real thing, and a mighty fine curry.

  • We are a group of 8 that went to Dunes Restaurant for lunch on the 2nd of November, two of our friends were down from JHB for the holidays. What a shocking experience...one of them is a Vegan and since the restaurants pizza oven was broken, they were not prepared to make a special dish for her, as she couldnt even eat the salads as they contained stuff she couldnt eat. Ive never experienced a restaurant where they dont try and accommodate you, the Chef apparently told them that hes too busy to make one meal. Dunes service has been bad for the last few years, but we tend to go back for the location and the kids, but dont think theyll see us again soon.

  • When last did you eat at Dunes? Ive always thought of Dunes as a daytime venue (when the weather is good). I know they do decent fish & chips and a very good thin-based pizza but I was blown away with their winter bistro menu. I had an avocado ritz starter with real queen prawns (not shrimps) for R35 & a 300g Fillet Steak (with baked potato & wild mushroom sauce) for only R68. Both were EXCELLENT!The food was so good & such good value I was back there 2 days later for more!

  • After living in Cape Town for more than 14 years, I had never lunched at the well known Dunes restaurant in Hout Bay. Since our group of friends had a visiting Dutch DJ with us, I suggested we head to Dunes since it was a perfect winters day to show our guest the beauty of Hout Bay. Unfortunately the setting was the only great thing about our lunch. After having to constantly hunt down our waiter to place drinks orders, we decided to call the manager to ask where our lunch was? 3 tables, who arrived after us, were served their food before us, some had even paid and left! The manager apologised nicely, and organised a basket of bread for us to nibble on and offered us a round of Jagermeister (not on the house). Eventually our food arrived, it was a simple lunch but it was far from simple. The said bread basket never arrived, the cheese sauce was milky muck, we had no cutlery, ordering more drinks was a stretch so we ate and asked for the bill. Upon receiving the bill we realised the waiter had included a 10% tip (usually mandatory for tables of 8 or more) yet we were not a table of 8! After a day of shocking service, average food, the cheeky waiter had the audacity to charge 10% on a table WITHOUT 8 people! We addressed this issue with him yet we werent bothered to try get the 10% back. Needless to say I will not be returning to Dunes anytime soon and I certainly wont be recommending it to any friends, especially if they have foreign guests with them. Super average restaurant with super average food and super average staff. Shame.

  • What a brilliant evening! It was cold and rainy and we headed to Dunes; the restaurant was warm and cosy...a beautiful setting. The winter soup - butternut - was exceptional and all our main courses were delicious. Prices were good, and the service was marvelous and we will definitely return! What a place! Thanks!

  • Im araid that Dunes restuarant in Hout Bay has succumbed to the complacency that afflicts so many restaurants whose superb locations provide a steady stream of customers no matter how terrible the food and the service. My young son loves going there because of the fantastic childrens area, and the vibe is always good, but the service - while friendly enough - is slow and chaotic. We were served our French salads AFTER dessert. Dunes is a great place to go for a sundowner, but I wouldnt recommend it as a restaurant.
