Food
The menu is rattled off verbally, and the curry repertoire includes fantastic local versions of fish, mutton, chicken, chops chutney and biryani. You can choose to have yours served with rice or great rotis, but bunny chow is king here.

Wine
The beer and bunny combo works best. Full bar service but no wine.

Service
Just what you’d expect: pleasant, efficient, fuss-free and hardworking. The small but industrious kitchen has a quick turnaround time.

Ambience
The aroma of curry guides you through a panel beater’s workshop into the canteen style eatery for a working class lunch. Table tops are covered in non-slip rubber, Manchester United posters feature and MTV almost drowns out the noise.

And...
Pick up a takeaway. (TG, October 2011)

  • Goundens has one of the best mutton bunny chows in Durban! Spicy and full of flavour and extremely filling. The quick turnaround time on your order is convenient for those with short lunch breaks. I just have one suggestion though, please consider a card machine for payments.

  • A swarm of flies surrounds the food and the diners. I went here in the summer and had the buffet, which also included flies. Why hasn't the Health Dept. closed this place down? Eat here at your own risk!!!

  • Goundens is an institution. The curry is sublime. The venue solidly working class. The clientele from all walks of life. Prices are excellent, vibe even better. Service can sometimes be slow when busy but chat over a 1l coke while waiting. Take aways are wicked when in a rush but the wait can be long during lunch hours. Saturdays are best for a lazy lunch.

  • The food is great! Mind you, I travel all the way from Gauteng to eat here. Its mouth watering and definitely worth the drive. Not much ambience but its better than all other Indian Restaurants. Mind you I think I'm going there now! Durban here i come.
