Where to find great winter specials in Pretoria

As temperatures drop, going out does not have to fall away. We’ve compiled a list for you of the tastiest ways to stay warm in the capital.

Die Bosvelder Restaurant (Centurion)

For a hearty Afrikaans cuisine option, head over to this spot that has a laidback outside area and regular musical guests. They are currently rolling out a variety of winter specials, like a game meat pie served with rooster broodjies. Lamb curry, oxtail and mutton tripe are also on offer with your choice of side.

KAROO Grill & Bar (Centurion)

Another great soup special is to be found over at KAROO in the Irene Village Mall. Each week, there will be a special soup served, from a wholesome broccoli or chicken noodle soup to a scotch broth. Most of these will be served with ciabatta bread for only R40. If you want something more substantial, the restaurant’s general menu includes a variety of steak and burger options.

The Stone Grill Restaurant and Bar (Prinshof)

If you’re up for a nice curry to keep you warm, this spot towards the centre of Pretoria has a special for those who like to come hungry. Get a Durban-style curry with either chicken or beef and eat as much as you like. This runs every Saturday from 11am till 9pm for the foreseeable future for just R75 per person. There’s also an indoor fireplace to help keep you cosy.

Goya’s The Hanging Garden (Rietondale)

Nothing says warm and toasty like a soup special, and Goya’s is making this a daily special occasion. Get a roasted pepper and tomato or their Moroccan butternut soup for only R49. It comes with their wood-fired artisanal bread. They have a variety of other regular specials, too, including on sliders and tacos.

The Godfather Restaurant (Centurion)

For a cosy steakhouse feel with a nice wine offering, head to The Godfather in Midstream. Their winter lunchtime specials run from Tuesday till Friday and include a pub lunch sirloin, barbecue spare ribs or a peri-peri half chicken, all served with sides and either a Stella Artois or Coke. If you come on a Sunday evening, grab a Godfather burger with chips and either a beer, milkshake or glass of wine for just R99.

The Social Grill (Pretoriuspark)

This trendy spot has some great draught pairing experiences lined up for winter. One option is a slow-roasted lamb rib with a pomegranate lemon-honey vinaigrette that comes with a Stella Artois draught. If you fancy a Leffe Blond beer, that comes with their chorizo cheese trio plate. There are Greek-style specials on Sundays and a variety of winter winners to be found in their home-ready meals offering. There are nice and warm classics such as butter chicken curry and beef lasagne, as well as larger offerings like a 1kg vegetarian lasagne or a large vegan cottage pie.

Doppio Zero (Hazeldean, Irene and Castle Gate)

If you’re near Hazeldean, Castle Gate or Irene, why not head to Doppio to try their new winter menu? There’s sticky Asian BBQ and sesame wings, and an oxtail and short rib quesadilla. In the soup section, you’ll find a beef goulash and a roasted butternut. If you can’t decide between a soup or a stew, try their new “stoupers”, which bring the best of both worlds together, are changed biweekly, and support a charity cause.
