3 new eateries with old roots in iconic locations

These iconic locations with reinvented eateries are simply too invitingly epic to miss out on.

The Winchester Boutique Hotel (Sea Point)

Cape Town’s iconic Winchester Mansions, rebranded to The Winchester Hotel after the grand reopening in 2021, brings nostalgic charm and old-school beauty to the Sea Point Promenade. The historic building underwent a major overhaul after being closed for the first time in nearly a century after they first opened their doors, due to Covid-19 constraints. The renovation along with chic new décor and style brought with it a renewed feel to the much-loved iconic location.

Harvey’s Bar reopened alongside a brand-new restaurant, Shoreditch House – both of which are open to the public. Harvey’s remains an all-time favourite spot with their famous streetside terrace, overlooking the stunning Atlantic Ocean – the perfect location to enjoy sundowners in style.

The sunny courtyard is draped in vibrant colours of pink and purple from the dramatic display of picturesque bougainvillaea creepers – the ideal spot to enjoy alfresco dining at Shoreditch House. The food is inspired by flames. The contemporary menu aims to elevate fire-cooked food and celebrates a variety of different cuisines, aimed at bringing global travellers and South Africans together in one stunning location.

The Seal Point Lighthouse (St Francis Bay)

Seal Point Lighthouse, one of the tallest lighthouses in South Africa that is still functional today, is steeped in rich maritime history. The iconic spot makes for a stunning location for a tour tower, or you can simply enjoy one of the many coastal walks around the area while you take in the never-ending shore-side views and epic sunsets.

With the opening of Nevermind, you can now enjoy more than just the sheer beauty of the iconic location. They make all the bread and pastries in-house and they have a small menu with a delicious, homely feel to it. You can even enjoy live music on Sundays. If you’re looking for an on-the-go snack, they have a kiosk serving all their freshly baked goods!

The Old Biscuit Mill (Woodstock)

The bustling Old Biscuit Mill packs a serious amount of charm and character, making it an iconic spot not to be missed in the heart of vibey Woodstock. The location is home to several unique retailers, restaurants, the Neighbourhood Goods Market and, now, Buns Bakery.

A quirky bakery where more is more when pink décor and sweet baked goods are concerned, they started out as an online bakery in lockdown. At their new location at the Old Biscuit Mill, everything is freshly baked in small batches by hand, ensuring their baked goods are always spectacular. From doughnuts to Ferrero Rocher-inspired choux buns, they have an amazing spread of sweet treats on offer.
