Stanley Street is one of the culinary destinations in Gqeberha, but Zanele van Zyl was up to the challenge of choosing her favourite dining spots in the area. Here’s where she recommends.

The Granary Restaurant

This spot is situated in an old warehouse. It has a rustic atmosphere, which made me feel like I was back at my mom’s home so, naturally, I was inclined to experience the restaurant. The Bhabhalaza Omelette has an intriguing ring to it, and certainly lived up to its name! Stuffed with peppers, beef mince, cheese, grilled mushrooms, tomatoes, avocado, chilli-mayo sauce and fresh chillies, this is one loaded omelette. It’s great for a morning after a night out as the chillies give it that special kick.

Nolio Restaurant

This is a cosy, warm Italian restaurant with indoor dining and heated outdoor seating … what more can you ask for? If you are looking for authentic Italian cuisine, this restaurant will send your taste buds to Italy. There is so much variety on the menu, and I would certainly recommend the spaghetti Bolognese. This is my husband’s specialty but he doesn’t cook all the time, so when I am at an Italian restaurant, it is my go-to dish. The portion at Nolio was generous, with a well-balanced and rich tomato sauce, generously topped with Grana Padano cheese. It was so plentiful, I even took some home – and my husband gave it the thumbs up too!

Salt Restaurant

This chilled eatery offers a wide variety of dishes. Everything on the menu is so appealing, and with a diverse cocktail and wine list menu, you’ll be spoiled for choice. The beef fillet with fries is well-basted with barbecue sauce, salt and pepper, and then flame-grilled. For dessert, treat yourself to their red velvet cake. It’s moist and layered with cream frosting and crushed nuts and garnished with coconut macaroons. The cake melts in your mouth, and I would treat myself to it again and again!
